Noseeums
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Help! I am in Culebra now, at CBV, and my 2 year old is getting eatten alive by the noseeums. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is it better to stay on the dry sand or wet? Closer to the vegetation behind the beach, or further away? Is there any particular time that there are more of them? Is there any bug repellent that works and any treatment for the itchiness after? I'd love for her to be able to enjoy the next 5 days. Thanks!

Noseeums are tiny. They get stuck in baby oil and can't bite through it. When you are out of the sun (so you don't burn) you can try this (or oily suntan lotion).

Aw, poor little thing. They are certainly a nuisance. They seem to come out as it heads toward dusk. I used a good bug spray (Deep Woods Off) which sort of worked, but I guess you wouldn't want to slather a 2 yr old with it. I rub bug repellent on my daycare children's clothes and it seems to help. I live in the forest, so I think it works pretty well. If she's having trouble sleeping due to the itch, Solarcaine works really well to relieve itching. I used it every night there and wouldn't have slept well otherwise. I actually left it on the picnic table and had a number of neighbours using it as well.

Green alcohol works for the itch. I think you can buy it at the grocery stores. I hate noseeums, I'd rather be stung by a bee. We were in the Bahamas for Thanksgiving and I looked like I had chicken pox from the bites. Evening hours are usually the worst.

the best protection against them is WIND. They're around when it's still..
