Seeking a working phone number!!
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: Daniela Shultz (65.121.119.---)
Date:   02-14-11 16:54

Hi,

I am desperately trying to book a flight to Culebra from San Juan International on March 25th, and back again on April 3. I have called every phone number on this website, and even filled out the form on Air Flamenco's website, and have been unable to get a hold of anyone. Does someone have a working number to anyone who might fly us to Culebra for a reasonable amount of money? I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

VAL 787.741.8331. AF is not flying regular flights right now.

Thanks, Geronimo. Any idea what their hours are? I just called and got no answer and no voicemail.

Good evening,
You can book online with Vieques Air Link (VAL) or phone their reservation # at 888-901-9247 from about 9-5 most days.

FLA is only flying charters at the moment.

Ah, if only it were that easy. I tried to book online, but there wasn't an option to fly to Culebra, only Vieques from San Juan International. Is there not a way to get from SJI to Culebra directly?

Your best bet would be to take a taxi to Isla Grande and take a flight from there to Culebra.

The phone number that Geronimo gave you is good! Keep trying. You have to realize the ticket agent is also baggage handler and sometimes the pilot.

Daniela, most of the little planes fly out of the smaller airport, Isla Grande. It's a 15 min cab ride from the SJU airport. Any flight from SJU would be more expensive due to the international airport fees. So you can charter a flight from SJU but it's ~$300 each way vs $130 round trip from Grande.

Good morning,
First, you CAN book online with VAL: http://www.viequesairlink.com/ & you CAN fly from San Juan to/from Culebra. It's only a 15 min. taxi ride to the smaller airport. The flights are less expensive bc of the landing fees.

Next, the number that I posted above is the RESERVATIONS number. Other numbers exist, but are not necessarily for making bookings.

Thanks for all the advice, Everyone! I understand now that I must take a cab to the smaller airport in order to book with VAL. Just one other issue- I don't get in till 5:00pm, and the last flight out of IG is 4:45pm. Does this mean I need to spend the night in PR? Same issue on the way back- we fly out of PRI at 11:30am, and we wouldn't get into IG till 10:30. Will that give us enough time to get over to the other airport or will we need to spend the night there as well?

Exciting little challenges that come along with traveling to a teeny place! I'm sure it will all work out.

Thanks again,
Daniela

We just flew Vieques Airlink and booked online. If you book online, be sure you call to confirm your reservation. We booked the 4:30/4:45 flight from Isla Grande to Culebra and it gave me a confirmation. When I called to confirm, they had us down for the 2:30 flight. This exact same thing happened to a friend. They were great and worked everything out for both of us. I would still call just to save yourself any surprises.

Update- Just spoke with someone at VAL who said he had no flights that would accomodate our 5:00pm arrival to SJI or our 11:30am departure from SJI. He suggested I try Cape Air. Going to try them now.

If you get into SJU at 5:00pm there is an option of taking the 7:00pm ferry from Fajardo to Culebra but leaving SJU at 5:00-5:30pm on Friday evening with the traffic you might not make it to the ferry on time. Then you could stay at the Fajardo in for the night. For ~$300 you can charter a flight from the big airport, SJU, at 5:30pm (or whenever you want to leave) directly to Culebra. Call Matt at Culebra Air: http://www.culebraairservices.com/

Upon leaving Culebra, if you are saying that you are looking at taking a 10:30am flight from Culebra to IG you would get there at 11:00 (if they leave on time). then a 20 min cab ride to SJU airport would get you there around 11:30am with no time to check in. Check on earlier flight or ferry option.

Thanks, Geronimo! I tried calling the ferry place, both in Fajardo and Culebra (all fourteen phone numbers), and there's no answer. I'll keep trying, but do you think the universe is just telling me I need to relax and just leave the last leg of our trip to chance? There appears to be a 7:00pm ferry (like you said) to Culebra, and then a 6:30am ferry from Culebra (website says "daily", not sure if that means Sundays, too, that's why I tried to call). I guess if worse came to worse we could always stay in Fajardo, right?

It will be a miracle if you get in touch with anyone at the ferry dock by phone. As far as I know the 6:30 a.m. ferry from Culebra runs every day. There are more options as far as places to stay in SJ, then you could go to Fajardo the next morning to catch the ferry. Another option is the Ceiba Country Inn, if you have a rental car. We stayed there last year, and then drove into Fajardo to drop off the rental car and catch the ferry.

Don't bother calling ferry dock. They won't answer. The ferry runs every day at (or near) the posted times. I meant that you could stay at the Fajardo Inn if you didn't make the 7:00pm ferry. If you cab it over to Fajardo have someone immediately run over to the ticket counter to purchase your Culebra ferry tix. The others can wait in the terminal with the luggage. And you better get on island time and just go with the flow.

Cape Air does not fly to Culebra.

Ditto "you better get on island time and just go with the flow", or you will not be happy with this trip.

Happy Diving!

Okay, it's official. I'm on island time. Relax, stop trying to make things happen ahead of time, and just wait and see what happens. Thanks to everyone for their advice, and I'll see you all in the islands next month!!

one more idea..when you get in to SJU, take a cab to Fajardo..spend the night at the Fajardo Inn, decompress, eat in their Mexican restaurant, request a room overlooking the pool...there are pretty distant mountain views, and take the 9 am ferry the next morn. Very very pleasant..btw...cab from SJu costs $70-80, Fajardo Inn about $100

Another option:
You could spend the night at the Hotel Milano, (clean & reasonable,) in Old San Juan and fly over from Isla Grande in the AM.

Milano Inn could be booked on 3/25/11. A nice resturant on the roof. Get booked w/ VA now.

After doing some research on TripAdvisor, I think I have things figured out. The Hotel Milano was full, so I booked a room in the Coqui Del Mar near Old San Juan and the beach. We'll spend the night there on the 25th, then take the ferry to Culebra the next morning. That way we won't be stressed about trying to catch the ferry, and get to do a little exploring (and decompressing, thanks Geronimo) in the process. Then ferry it on the way back. Thank again to everyone for the kind words and advice. I'm so excited I can't stand it! Only twenty-eight more days!

Hey, don't feel bad. I booked our flights from and to the states working with Air Flaminco scheulded flights and ran into the same problem - not available now with their issues going on. With VAL one way would work, the other would not. I have decided to go with Matt at Culebra Air Services like someone suggested. Yes it will cost me more but taking into consideration the cost of the cab to the smaller airport (both ways), changing two A/A tickets to a later departure from San Juan, and two round trip tickets on VAL - it's not costing me that much more to go with the charter. I walk off the plan at San Juan and hop on to the Culebra Air Service flight. Plus when I come back from Culebra Matt will pick us up with plenty of time to catch our flight from San Juan without having to get up at the crack of dawn. I've looked forward to this trip for a long time and this plan works for us. We didn't want to give up any time in Culebra - that's why we elected to go this way. Have fun....
