road conditions
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Are most of the roads/trails to beaches passable without 4 wheel drive? Will a golf cart/scooter do for most travel throughout the island? Really don't want to have to rent a jeep.

The roads tend to be full of potholes and broken pavement (or no pavement), and some of the hills are steep. There is a "crater" near the top of the last hill going to Zoni that causes significant problems for many drivers -- Jerry recommends parking at the top of the hill and walking, even with a jeep. If you are used to driving back roads that are narrow, steep and rough you should have no problem, but don't expect smooth pavement, wide lanes, etc. One of the main advantages of a jeep is the high clearance -- you'll be glad you have it if you go to Punta Soldado, for example.

Jerry would recommend you leaving the jeep in town and walking to Zoni. LOL. You can get all around on a golf cart but when it rains you'll get wet and you can't lock any of your stuff up. But they are fun. Be sure to hit the 19th hole.

Yeah, Jerry told me not to drive to Punta Soldado too but I did (don't tell!). I've driven roads like that since I was a kid so didn't have any problems. I did get to watch a car trying to get out of the crater at Zoni, though, which was entertaining in a way. If people are used to driving back roads in the mountains they should be fine, but for those who've never ventured off the pavement it can be an adventure.

We had a SUV @ the house we rented...I didn't think we'd need it for the week, but there are some steep hills, so beat's walking. We saw someone biking, looked like she was going to pass out. A golf cart around town would be fine, but I'd get the SUV if you want to explore (which you do) it's well worth it!

Good evening,
We live on Culebra year-round & our car is not 4WD.

We've had guests get bikes, cars, scooters, golf carts, cars, jeeps, & the Volkswagon Thing. It just depends on your preference. All are good options.

Best,

I was there for a very rainy week in July and felt really sorry for the poor soaked couple at Milka in their golfcart. We rent jeeps, but not four wheel drive ones. We drove to Zoni with no problems. We have driven mountain roads worse than these. However, we did not chance Soldado. We had flash floods the day I thought I might go, but there was a backhoe clearing the road.

so the crater is back? figured it'd be a matter of time. we chickened out and parked up there. but then saw locals driving 2WD pick-ups down to the beach and figured what the hell after that. but I wouldn't take a golf cart out that far.

I'm just wondering when the blacktop over the ravine on the way to Zoni (after the crater) is going to give way. That to me appears to be the dangerous part of the road. And with all of the rain over the past year it has to have gotten worse. As noted above, you can always walk down.

Has the bridge repair/paint work been completed?

Has the second gas station reopened?

When is the lama migration season?

Compared to the late 90s, the road to Zoni is interstate. Have your passenger jump out and guide you past the crater. You may have to straddle it, but just go slow and listen to youor spotter. Easy-peasy.

When is the lama migration season? The llamas migrated to Maine for the summer, but the herd is back.

Happy Diving!
