Coming to Culebra in March
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi,
I am planning on coming to Culebra 3.16.10 - 3.23.10 to celebrate my 40th B-Day with some friends and family. How many yet, I do not know.
I am going to camp at Flamenco Beach those 7 nights/8 days.
I have some questions about getting from San Juan to Culebra.
Is the ferry reliable? I've heard mostly no. I have been to PR many times in my life(I have family there), but never made it to Culebra.
My plan is to fly in to San Juan on 3.15.10 and get to Culebra on 3.16
Can me and some friends get the 9AM ferry on Wed. 3/16/10 at 9AM with ease?
I would rather not spend a whole day trying to get on a public ferry if it is a hassle. The water taxi idea looks like an option, if not too expensive. Would like details about that.

As for camping at Flamenco Beach in mid March, a few questions.
I hear it is very safe, but is there a place to keep valuables when you're not at camp? Keep those things in my rent a car?
How are the mosquitos in mid March?
What is the best days and time to call the office at Flamenco Beach campground?

Thx in advance for all tips and info.

We have visited Culebra in March 2009 and March 2010. While only two visits to Culebra doesn't make us experts (there are many who post here who have much more familiarity) I will share what we have experienced. We have taken the 9 a.m. ferry from Fajardo both times on Friday and other than a long wait in line for tickets have had no problems. We have gotten tickets and the ferry has been on time. I would advise getting there early, as the line is long, and either bring a couple of water bottles or buy them for a dollar from the guy selling them out of a cooler. You will get thristy standing in line. We have tried to buy tickets ahead of time but haven't been successful either time. We have taken the 6:30 a.m. ferry from Culebra both years, and there have been no lines and few passengers, so showing up at 6:10 or so has worked.

We have encountered a few mosquitoes in March, but not too many. The first year we were there most of the mosquitoes were inside the house -- outdoors was fine, since the breeze kept the bugs down.

Haven't tried camping at Flamenco, but others have suggested digging a hole in the sand under your tent and putting valuables under the tent. We have left things in vehicles (locked) with no problem both years -- as with anywhere else, put things out of sight.

FLA is taking reservations for flights in November.
