Getting from San Juan to Fajardo to Culebra & Back
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi, I'm planning a 5 day trip (currently thinking of flying into San Juan - we're getting a deal on a stay in a resort there), but I would like to get out and see more of PR. I'm thinking this is too ambitious, but would it be possible to do a long day trip to Culebra? I was thinking of taking a Publico from San Juan to Fajardo and then a ferry, but my concern is getting back to San Juan. I know there are no timetables or such for the publico system (from what I've read) so when is the latest I could take a publico back to San Juan ? I don't really want to get stranded! Are there taxis available just in case?

If you are thinking about a day trip to Culebra then fly out of San Juan to Culebra. Leave from the little airport. About $105 for a round trip flight. They can take you in the early morning and return you in the evening. Then, what do you want to do on Culebra? If you want to see a lot then rent a car and go crusing around. If you want to go to the beach, take a publico to Flamenco or Zoni beach and spend the day. Just a few suggestions.

And bring deet spray.

Thank you, that was very helpful.

If I do take a ferry, and take the last ferry back to fajardo, any suggestions on how I should get back to san juan withoutspending so much money? Are there really no shared vans or publicos at that time? Do you think I can find people willing to share a ride back?

The problem with getting off the ferry in Fajardo is that's it's a big mob scene there with everyone scambling for transportation. So you might be able to catch a ride with someone heading up to San Juan. I have not tried it myself. Good luck however you decide.

We met some guys on Flamenco that did a day trip from San Juan. They took a taxi as they were too young to rent a car. The fare was around $80 to get to the small airport near Fajardo so they would have been better served flying direct from San Juan as the earlier comment suggests.

If you are old enough, just rent a car for the day and drive to Fajardo yourself. The air option is better though since you can leave the island later in the day vs. when having to ride the ferry.

Stay in culebra and take a day trip to San Juan. You'll thank me later.

Check with Isla Nena and Vieques air Link and M&N Aviation for possible flight alternatives.
