I been there two times four years ago. It's about 50 miles from San Juan a cab ride will cost between $50-65. Both times we rented a car. We could only buy ferry tickets at the terminal. We arrived about 7:30am because of fear of missing the first ferry and crowds. From what I remember they do not start selling tickets until 9am but when we arrived there was a line forming.
