First timers...need your sage advice
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello there!
We're going to be in Puerto Rico for Memorial Day Weekend and would really like to see Culebra. We're staying on the Southwestern tip of the island, but renting a car so we can easily get to the ferry to the island.

My questions are:

How far is it actually to drive from, say, Boqueron to Fajardos to catch the ferry?

Is it possible for Culebra to be a "Day Trip"?

And, once we get there, is there transportation available to a great beach? (Not too full of people) Any recommedations?

I'm really so excited about the trip. I have a feeling that Puerto Rico is going to be a very magical and special place...(especially since most days are spent commuting via the F train from Brooklyn to Midtown Manhattan...)

Thanks for the help!
Please, post if you have any advice for a young couple about to have a great vacation!

Depending on traffic, the trip from Boqueron to Fajardo should take you about 3 hours. You should give yourselves 3.5 to 4 hours if this is your first time driving this route.
You can also fly from Fajardo or San Juan to Culebra. This will give you more time in Culebra if you plan a day trip.
You'll find transportation in Culebra easily. rental cars are also available.

I'm not sure about the distance between Boqueron & Fajardo but I also recommend for you to fly from Fajardo to Culebra $25 one way (10-15 min flight). The ferry cost is $2 but is a long trip.

Once you are in Culebra you will find transportation easily. We went to Flamenco Beach and is a beautiful beach, once you are there, you don't want to leave the island. Consider renting a village or camping for $10 per night.

Let me know how it goes because we plan to go back to Puerto Rico soon.

Good luck!

Do you realize that you are going from one corner of the island to the other and then hop over to Culebra? We go to Culebra every year and love it but we also take three-four days of our trip and explore Puerto Rico. We love both. I would suggest you might end up spending alot of your vacation getting somewhere instead of being there. If you have a car you might cruise the interior which we did this past March and loved it. Save Culebra for at least three days or like me three weeks. Where ever you are you'll love the people, we always have.

I WOULD SAY THE DISTANCE IS ABOUT 100 MILES. I WOULD LEAVE EARLIER THAN YOU THINK. AT LEAST BY AN HOUR

My husband, son and I just returned from a trip to Puerto Rico in April, which included a trip to Culebra. First, I must say it Culebra was one of my favorite places of our trip. We too considered making it a day trip, but decided to do a full 24 hours upon the suggestion of others on the message board. You truely can not make this a day trip unless you maybe take the plane. We took the ferry which was a pleasent hour and twenty minute trip. But when taking the ferry you have to figure in parking your car, buying tickets, etc. I would suggest staying the night on Culebra, but wouldn't suggest the accomodations we had. As for a rental car on Culebra we didn't find it necessary because we stayed in town, and everything was just a short walk.
