Best time of year
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Can anyone tell me what the best time of year (weather wise) to go to culebra. I don't mind the heat and humidity, but I want to stay away from the rainy season and I want to have really good water visibility for diving

Visibility is about the same year round - 30-50 feet max.

Happy Diving!

According to a local resident's data (Hillman, who also posts occasionally on this site), the rainiest months are September and October, which is the peak of hurricane season.

Hola! June should be great weather wise. The heat and humidity is not intense and the crowds should be low. There are always scattered showers here and there but, they usually don't last very long. Wonderful time to go. School is out though, lots of kids everywhere. Happy travels! J

Thank you all for the information. I'll either be making my plans for March (Spring Break) or end of June. I'm coming with my 16 year old son and I really dont want to take him out of school for a week, hence coming at the end of June. We can't wait though!

Thanks again and have a great day!

Can anyone verify this? We are going to Culebra in November for (amongst other things) snorkelling and diving, and 30-50 feet max is a bit less than what we hoped for.

Anyone?

Kind regards,
Kristin & Anders

I believe you will be pleasantly surprised and satisfied with your snorkeling and diving.

Visibility?

If one could see a thousand or two thousand feet would it somehow make for a better experience than seeing some nice things two feet away?

Well I've been diving for15 years and visibility does make all the difference - especially when you want to take pictures - pictures tend to be less colorful when the water is murky - light doesn't project through the water as easily, making all the colors seem duller. I've been diving in water that was near 200' visibility (like jumping into a glass of water), and water that was about 30-40' visibility. When I dove last August off of Luis Pena Island visibility was about 50-60'. I'm sure during the rainy seanson visibility will be less due to churning of the water, and during coral spawning visibility will be less. So visibility really isn't the same all year round and it can make all the difference to a diver.

You need to check out Debbie's dive pics made off Culebra, where she owns a home. They are awesome. I have been diving 32 years and would rather be diving, whether the water is murky or not, anytime. From posts I have read, many other locations in the Caribbean have much clearer water. Coming from landlocked TN the diving is wonderful on Culebra. We often have 30-50 ft visibility when we dive off Destin FL and I have some excellent photos to show for it. Have a great trip. Hope you will will not be disappointed with the diving. I know we weren't.
