Grocery Stores - Fajardo
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: DC (---.washdc.east.verizon.net)

Where are the best grocery stores cost wise in Fajado, close to the Ferry? And has anyone done the 6:30am trip to go grocery shopping and made it back in time for the 9am ferry back to Culebra? Don't feel like going and waiting around for the 3pm boat.

One more Q: How much does it cost to take your car over and back? I have a Jeep Liberty on the island.

Many thanks,
Damian

Hola! Plaza Fajardo is about 6-7miles from the ferry. You will find Walmart and Econo supermarket, off Route (Carretera) 3 on Carr. 940, Km 43.5
Ste 180
Fajardo, Puerto Rico 00738
787-285-0544

There are also good stocked grocery stores in Culebra, unless you are looking for a specialty item (?).
Look up how to take your personal vehicle to Culebra by doing a SEARCH in the FORUM. You have to book it in advance, at least 2 months, and you and your vehicle go on the cargo ferry. Locals get first dibs.
Happy travels! J

Hola! Totally understand. Save your money but, rice and beans at El Batey is cheap and tasty as well as pinchos at the beach. Do remember to indulge with local food and drink when you can. You never know when you'll return. Happy travels! J

You would have to buy groceries for at least a month for a family of 4 to warrant a trip to Fajardo to go grocery shopping. The 5 to 10% you pay more on Culebra should be worth a day on the beach, which cleanliness is paid for by the very people you are reluctant to buy from .... Think about it and buy locally!
Maybe you run out of one item which you are going to buy in Culebra - no? What if that store weren't there, because everybody wants to save that buck?

Support local businesses and shop in Culebra!!

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael

LOL yep I knew it. I could have bet a years salary that Michael was going to post a lecture to me about buying food in Culebra. Just couldn't refrain from doing it could you? You are the very reason I hesitate to post on this board. The 'support local business police' gets on my friggin nerves. To keep you from blowing a gasket Michael, I will tell you why I am going to Fajardo to buy food. I am having 12 people to the house that I own on Culebra, which adds to supporting the island, they are giving me money for food, they want to get the most for their money. Food for a family of 4 for a month? Bull @!#$ Michael. I have been a resident in Culebra for 3 years now, I know the cost of food there and I know all about supporting local business. I have given thousands of dollars to Milka and other establishments. Believe me, I SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS! So don't lecture me. Find out the facts first before you go running your mouth about how no one supports business there. And frankly it's none of your business why I am going to Fajardo.

Again, you are the very reason I do not want to post here. Do you feel good about that?

Some advice for you Michael since you are the owner/operator of this website. Maybe it's best if you just answer your members questions rather than lecturing them and making them feel like children getting slapped on the hand. We are adults who are going to make our own decisions and we really don't need the lecture from you. I support your efforts to want to raise awareness to support local business and I know how important it is but doing it this way, lecturing in a way that makes a person feel bad is just sort of unprofessional. There are much better ways to accomplish your goal.

DC
you post on a public forum, so its hard to expect "none of your business"to apply, but you are entitled to not answering or saying its irrelevant.

also, the messages here are not only for the person that asked the question.
the messages go to everyone reading.
and even though only a few people post, there are lots of people reading.

so i think it is important to remind people reading this, who may be interested in this post specifically because they are contemplating shopping on the mainland before coming over, that it is important not to bring the big island garbage to our little islands.
the garbage should stay where the revenue is made.
we have the same issue on vieques. although not quite as much because not as many locals ferry over to vacation.

so yes, you may have a great reason to buy on the mainland this time. but michaels message is still important and valid. for everyone even if not for you this time.

as for bringing your car over,
just rent one from world. if you do it in advance, you can get one for $35. and if you return it before noon, or rent it for only 4 hours or something like that, it is only $25.

Thanks Frank. It is more about Michael's approach, not the issue about buying local. He comes on swinging his finger at you like you are a little kid. The way you approach it is much more effective. Michael throws down the gauntlet if he does not agree with you. I have seen him do it many times in other strings. We are adults, not children in his little forum classroom. And if he answered my question and THEN proceeded to lecture me, I wouldn't had said it wasn't his business, but instead he got in his pounce position by posting 'Why would you want to go to Fajardo to do your grocery shopping?' That's when I knew the lecture was about to come. And he wasn't directing his lecture to all the others who will be reading this. He directed it to me making me look like I don't support local business. He does not know anything about me to start saying the things he is saying. All I was asking was where the food store are in Fajardo and he then took it upon himself to assume that I don't support local business and saying things like 'Maybe you run out of one item which you are going to buy in Culebra - no?' Ummm NO. Here is what he is doing. He is basically creating a rule here to not mention anything about buying off the island and along with that, a rule to never say anything negative about the island including restaurant service, the beaches, the roads, you name it. The restaurant service is another joke on this island. God forbid anyone uses this forum like a forum should be used. Just say positive things about Culebra and we will all get along, right. Please, give me a break. Michael, you should have started a blog, not a forum to push your agenda. A forum is for people to express their feelings no matter if it meets your agenda or not. I have seen argument after argument on this forum mainly because YOU don't agree with what someone says. That is not being an effective moderator. I spend more time on here defending my opinion than actually getting any real information. Makes no sense to me.

Not meaning to fan the flames, though it may not matter since this will probably be deleted, but there is another Culebra forum with a very helpful moderator. Go to Culebra dot com.

I have no dog in this hunt, but if the OP (DC) has "been a resident on Culebra for three years," as he/she said

one would think the poster would know where the markets are in Fajardo.

Something does not compute.

DC, it was impossible to discern from your original post that you are a knowledgeable resident of Culebra. That's why I asked. Your answer to my question did not really enlighten us either, other than you wanted to save money. Usually posters here are on vacation for a couple of weeks max. It really is a waste of time to spend a day to go shopping to Fajardo - IMO. And that's what we are dealing here with - opinions. I know, yours are more valid than mine, but I still am entitled - no?

Would you have mentioned (how is one supposed to do research on your original post?), hey I have a house here and want to throw a party and do not even know my way around Fajardo, my answer would indeed have been different.

Locals have for years had cars parked in Fajardo, fly over, drive to various supermarkets, put the coolers and boxes on the ferry and fly back - that's the way to do it fast.

I still think it's a waste of time and resources unless you go shopping on a different scale than your plans.

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael

ishtuva: I am not a full time resident of the island. To many residents of Culebra, that makes me a non-resident even though I pay taxes. And the reason I did not know where the food stores are in Fajardo is because I have been BUYING MY FOOD AT MILKA!!! Does that compute?

Michael: The issue here is that you jumped to the conclusion that I was a tourist and did not want to spend my money here. Like Frank said, I should of said the reason is irrelevant but I highly doubt that would have stopped you from lecturing me on your agenda. I even stated to 'hold the lectures' in my next post but that still didn't stop you. You have an agenda Michael which makes this not a real forum. It's more like North Korea. I could have bet a years salary that you were going to say what you said. I have heard it all before on this forum.

You ask me if I think you are entitled to an opinion. Why don't you let people who have had a bad experience voice their opinion on here and not make them feel like crap for it. Honestly, the way you and some of the people here talk to the visitors of Culebra is rather embarrassing. I would expect anyone who had a bad experience in Culebra and posted it here to never return back just because of the way they were made to feel on here.

When posters start referring to this forum as North Korea, and begin shouting "MILKA," I bow out.

lol Bob
Juanita Banannas is the most professional restaurant on the island!!!
LOL, just kidding

i think its true that Michael has an agenda.
but dont most of us?
i know I do.
i mention the same thing.
the fact is, it is a very imprtant issue to the little islands.

visitors bring so much garbage with no thought of how it impacts our lives.

thats why i am in favor of a visitors fee. eith added to the ferry tickets or airfare.

its not like we ship the garbage back to the mainland.

i have had my little disagreements with michael too. but i still appreciate what he's got going on with the vieques and culebra pages.

:)

DC, I suggest you start a website with your agenda.

I feel, you are exactly doing what you critizice me for. Please, when you do make accusations, come up with some quotes, where I 'make them feel like crap for it'!

I can mention one instance where I did the opposite right here on this very thread: When you first posted, you misspelled Fajardo twice. In the title as well as your post. I went in there and edited the title of your post and yes, I did jump to the conclusion that someone who owns a house here would know how to spell Fajardo. (Since you did it twice in a row, it could not have been a typo)

If I did not have an agenda, I would not have started this website nor this forum.
How long have you been coming to the island?
When I first started coming, I met a lot of people who were highly disappointed by the lack of things in Culebra. They went back home, had a horrible time and nobody was served. I put out some info, that, yes is my opinion and to add to the mix, I put up a forum, so you can 'make others feel like crap' and voice your opinion. Many have chosen not to post here because I let negative reviews of businesses stand - no matter what my personal opinion of the business or whether they are advertisers or not. Ask around, or better yet go into really old threads - it's all there.

You are welcome to keep criticizing me, this forum, this website and all the bad service you are getting on this island.

Just for the fun of it: What's the budget for your food shopping trip?

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael

I think Culebra needs a new Green Walmart. It would provide plenty of job opportunity and no need for anyone to have to take that fossil fuel burning ferry back and forth to Fajardo. And they should add gass pumps at the store too since it's so busy downtown. :o)

And this thread made my Friday chuckle.

but but but. no one has mentioned Superette Mayra, and the lovely family that has owned and run this most local grocery store for many many years. I LOVE that store..their prices are amazingly close to the prices in Fajardo, and they they treat their customers right. Now THERE'S a place i feel good about supporting..one of my favorite groceries in any continent or hemisphere!

There is also the new market Costa del sol near the airport (great prices on alcoholic beverages)...great prices as well, along with Genesis (who's road got paved today, hooray!) and the veggie guy, I think we can compare well with Fajardo. Sure, Sam's and Costco's rock, but that's way out of Fajardo. I'm just surprised that someone who owns a home on Culebra is such an adamant sort...relax! Tranquillo, buddy! Life is way too short to expend such hostile energy. If you want a forum with no issues with how it is run...best to start your own...*cough*
