Town or Away from Town?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I am traveling with a girlfriend to Culebra next week. I quickly need to secure a place to stay. It looks like there are condos near town (ie. within 100 yards of the dock) or casitas further out near zoni or other beaches. Which is better to stay in?

Do you go into town for most of all meals? Can you have a couple drinks and drive back out to casitas? Is walking home from dinner a major advantage? Any problems with safety/break-ins in town versus outside of town? We will have a jeep to drive around.

Gracias!

The island is not that big and since you are planning on having a vehicle you can get anywhere pretty quick. It's about a 5 mile drive from Zoni to town and the road is now paved so that's no big deal getting there. So it's really what is your preference? The Zoni end will be MUCH quieter. If you stay in or near town you can walk around to the places. This time of year I'm not sure how busy town may be anyway. So I believe that either place you decide you will have a great time.

If you are up for a secluded beach, try Brava. Turn at the 1905 house and drive to the end of the road and then hike up and over the hill. Beware of high surf conditions. Sort of a mini NorEaster in the Mid-Atlantic today will be sending big swells that way shortly.

Hola! It really depends on how much you want to pay and what are your lodging tastes. There is lodging of all kinds: big small, simple bare bones and spacious with kitchens and other amenities. There are houses at and near Zoni you can rent as well as other places on other beaches and closer to town. Culebra is not very big, you can basically walk to restaurants and stores from the dock. Having a jeep means you walk less and are able to get to the grocery stores and other places without any effort. Although, if you have had too much to drink and want to walk to and from your lodging from your restaurant or watering hole, you need to have this in consideration as well. Check out the map in this website under MAP and also go to Culebra online local newsletter:
http://theculebracalendaronline.com/
On the right hand column, at the very end, there is good map:
http://www.resortmaps.com/culebra
It will give you a good reference where all the accommodations, shopping and eating places are.
When we are at the island, we usually go to Pandeli, a local bakery for breakfast, eat at one the small beach kiosks for lunch at Flaming Beach, and go to dinner out. Dinner can be from simple rice, beans and grilled chicken at El Batey or maybe something fancier at Mamacita's, Dingy Dock's,etc. There are quite a number of restaurants to choose from. Check out their websites before you go so you can see the variety in their menus and prices.
Crime is low to none in Culebra, of course I'm sure you'll want to leave your Rolex and Tiffany diamonds at home, not good beach wear, LOL!!!! You will be safe in Culebra, just take the same precautions you would when traveling anywhere. Don't leave any valuables visible, no huge amounts of cash with you, etc. Happy travels! J

"Lunch at Flaming Beach"??? Haven't heard that translation of Flamenco before. Or are you refering to the way one looks after spending the whole afternoon on the beach? :-)
