Weather
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi!

My friends and I are planning to visit Culebra next week and I just checked weather.com. It seems that it is supposed ot rain every day from today until next Thursday. Although I am concerned about the precipitation, I do know that Carribean weather tends to have a quick afternoon shower almost every day. Also, since this prediction seems a little suspect, I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight on the current weather conditions, the general conditions for mid-May, and the forecast for next week. Thanks!

Matt

Matt,

If you look closely at the information on the reporting location you will note that they are actually forecasting for Roosevelt Roads Naval Base, just south of Fajardo, on the big island of PR. It is just a few miles due east of El Yunque Rainforest.
Culebra is situated just south of a weather controlling current that causes most rain to veer to the northwest of the north shore. I have stood on Zoni Beach numerous times and watched angry squalls pass through the sound between Culebra and Cayo Norte, just a few hundred yards offshore, while standing in bright sunlight. It is one of those amazing natural phenomena that make you realize "we're not in Kansas anymore, Toto". It made for some spectacular photographs, BTW.
On paper, at least, Culebra is a desert climate. There are no rivers that I know of, which contributes to the superior snorkling visibility in the adjacent waters. The vegetation is primarily succulents and other flora which can survive in relatively dry climates.
That said, I visited Culebra last New Year after the island had had a near- record rainfall in November and daily showers continued through the holidays. We were only washed out on a single day and that was our last.
It was remarkable to see the "brown" island I have always known be so vibrantly GREEN.
My advice is to enjoy the tropical showers, if you are lucky enough to get them. the only real downside would be the mud from the downtown construction.

Thanks for the info, Doug! You quelled some of my concerns.

Does anyone know what the current weather conditions (and next week's) are?
