Just back from Culebra!!

My husband and I just returned from Culebra and had the most amazing, relaxing time. We absolutely loved it and were sad to leave.

We rented a house/villa from Jim Galasso at Culebra Island Realty. Dealing with him was very easy and he was very thorough and professional. We rented Casa Marbella, and I cannot believe that there is anyplace on the island with better views. We woke every morning looking out at Zoni Beach, Culebrita and Cayo Norte. We have traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean, and this is right up there at the top of the list as the best. (the info is on this site under shelter)

We rented our jeep from Jerry's Jeeps, who was also very easy to work with and a wealth of information and if you rent longer than a week you get a break on the price ($45-$50/day). He is directly accross the street from the airport.

OK, Mamacita's....WE LOVED IT!! We ate there for lunch and twice for dinner, and had drinks at the bar. We always had good service and the staff was friendly. Especially the waitress we had for dinner our last night there (thursday, april 29th). she was a delight and as nice as could be. what a great way to end a great vacation.

El Bately rocks for the most awesomest (yes, my word) hamburger on the planet!

All the beaches are great, nothing bad to say about any of them: Zoni Beach, Flamenco, Carlos Rasario (bring your snorkling gear!)-we saw two stingrays right near shore- you can't go wrong anywhere.

You must go to Culebrita. We rented a water taxi to take us: Ocean View water taxi which also seems to go under the name "Culebra Island Tours" that picks you up and drops you off at Mamacita's. $40 RT pp.

DON'T go to Culebra if you are looking for all the ammenities of the big resorts and a jumping nightlife. DO go if you are looking for quiet, relaxation and slow island life (which is how we should live everyday). The people there are kind and helpful and I hesitated to tell anyone about it (want to keep it all to ourselves..lol), but if you are here, you know about it already.

The motto of the island seems to be, "Open some days, closed on others", you gotta love it....

I second everything you stated. I was there with my family of four, the week of April 12th-we had a wonderful time too! Yes, we did Flamenco,
Zoni and Carlos Rosario. I think my favorite was Zoni because of the view and I only wished we had done the water taxi to Culebrita too-next time!
Everything was beautiful and relaxing. We ate at Mamacita's-great-excellent, Dinghy Dock for drinks-great.
Also, Barbara Rose's across from the airport-excellent Crab cakes and fish and chips, plus local folks to entertain you.
I hope the world doesn't discover our secret-eventhough the Travel Channel has! I check this website at least once a week to stay connected to my fond memories fo Culebra!!
Good Day.

There are mosquitos but we didn't think they were that bad. I took vitamin B-12 for about a month prior to our visit but my wife didn't. I never really had a problem, but she had to use alot of OFF (island perfume).

Mosquitos are really bad when it has rained a lot...otherwise OFF works great!!

I have to give Culebra, and Puerto Rico for that matter a great big THANK YOU for a wonderful vacation. I found the people wonderful and welcoming which is hard to find on many islands. Culebrita was a lovely easy going island. We rented a boat from Culebra Boat Rentals and went over to the island. Apparently we picked a great day (Monday), because we spent about three hours their and didn't see a single other person. Lovely and easy snorkeling saw lots of fish and saw a barracuta and small sting ray. Getting there was a little rough for me (I dont' have much experience being on the ocean), but my husband (who has a lot of experience) didn't think twice about the big waves. lol But, braving the waves was worth it!

As for the baby and the mosquitos. There were lots of mosquitos in certain places, so bring your skintastic for the baby. They were a little more active at dusk. One last thing, don't go here expecting to have the local 24 hour Stop & Shop. Make sure to have what your baby will need before the stores close. I took my three year old, and he had a blast! But he was out of luck for his night night snack, because of my lack of planning. ;-)

pre-need purchasing is important.

Stayed on the West side of the island last time and had few problems, heard from others down near the harbor and on the East side it's a different story
