Publicos within Culebra... what is reasonable?

Other than the $3/pp cost to get from Dewey to Flamenco, what is typically the cost of getting around the island in publicos if we wanted to go to other beaches? Are there any guidelines/average costs published anywhere? I know people have to make a living, but I don't want to feel I'm getting ripped off. I don't think renting is an option; our plan is to go on a kayak/snorkel tour on one day and spend another day on the beach/beaches before heading out on the 5pm ferry.

It varies. Getting from town to some of the other beaches can be a lot more than $3.

But if you're only going to be there for a day or two, why not just stick with Flamenco (and walk over the hill to Carlos Rosario if you want to be more private)? Those two beaches are among my favorites in the entire Caribbean.

My family and I camped for ten nights and never went to any other beaches. We were totally happy with the Flamenco area (including the beaches on the other side of the hill).

Thanks Mort - for example, what would be a reasonable fare to go one way from town over to Zoni? Twenty each way for four people?

Sorry, I'm not sure. Never done it via taxi. If I had to guess, it might be a bit more than 20 each way, but less than 30. But that's just a guess.

I don't have an estimate of reasonable fare to Zoni, but would suggest that you negotiate with the publico driver before you get in. DO have a plan to get back from Zoni, and DON'T rely on calling the publico to come back, because most cell phones do not work on Zoni. We once picked up a couple of members of a Scout troup (there were about 30 of them) and took them back to the airport where they could send a publico for the rest of their people. They had no idea they couldn't "just call" for a ride back, and the publico driver failed to let them know that the cell signals are poor from that area.

Happy Diving!
Debbie

I caught a publico ride from Zoni to the airport and it was $5 pp a year ago. And my Verizon cell phone does NOT work out Zoni way. How pleasant that is. No phones ringing on the beach. :o)
