Culebrita closed during turtle hatching ??
Culebra, Puerto Rico

My hermano borracho is thinking that Culebrita is closed at certain times so as not to disturb the young turtles hatching and being eaten by seagulls. Any truth to this ??

can you close an island to seagulls?

I'd like to close my yard to squirrels.

It seems to me that the authorities would WANT us to disturb the seagulls from eating the hatchlings.

I say we should write a letter condemning this barbaric practice.

As to David's question, I'm not sure how they would close Culebrita exactly. Would they post a guard?

Well, now that I think of it, I was at Culebrita a couple year's ago on my friend's catamaran. We were boarded by a five armed military-type personnel who searched us for "human trafficking".

Yeah, right. Most human traffickers take a break at Culebrita to do some snorkeling and sunbathing.

We figured that it must have been some kind of training exercise. Or maybe they were to chicken to harass ACTUAL smugglers because those might be too dangerous, so they filled their daily quota on people like us.

Possibly they were looking for stow-away turtles from the Mediterranean?!

Human traffickers in Culebrita is indeed funny ;) - But it would make for a scenic drop-off!

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael

Michael, you're right about the scenic factor, and we definitely charge extra to drop them off at Culebrita. Whoops.... I shouldn't have let that slip.

Geronimo, you would be correct except for the fact that our turtles had been eaten by sea gulls just a few days prior.

Mort - did that really happen? while human trafficking is a serious issue, it's hard to imagine utilizing a catamaran via Culebrita for such a purpose - very clever of you. (or were you the cargo?)

Well, my friend insisted to me that I was on the boat merely as his guest. But for all I know, he was just waiting for an opportunity to sell me.

But the boarding incident really did happen. Even though we knew we were in U.S. territory and we had all our documentation, it was still an unsettling experience.

Speaking of Culebrita, I've been there three different times on my friend's catamaran. One time we were the only people there. Another time there were perhaps a dozen people there. And the other time there were more than 30 different boats, of which 20 were tied side to side on the beach with loud music and major partying. (We didn't stay long that time.)

Mort:

guest, yes. well that can mean so many things...

(best pronounced with a vaguely Eastern European accent)

hope the Easter visitors don't get scared, but a holiday weekend does entice a lot of boaters from the big island.

Charles you don't strike me as someone with a limited sense of humor. You're not, are you?

As for David's question, I think it's been established that none of us are aware of any problems with Culebrita being closed for turtle season.

yes i have a "sense of humor",however it saddens me that Isla Culebra has become a competative sport of "oneupmanship",kinda like talking to "Dead Heads"."who's been there more times?""who was there first?""who knows more locals?""who remembers Sharky and Fidel?".sadly you are all missing IT.YOU don't GET Culebra.and to read about how you defend the island from encroachment and developement but at the same time create a website that welcomes millions of strangers to "share" a place that isn't your's to share.you could have just gone home and told a couple of friends....no ,you had to create a website and tell the whole world about the secret you found.Unfortunately the internet age and particularly websites like this will be the undoing of Isla Culebra.I'm glad i got to live it before you got there.

mixed message there. ok, so we can say a little bit but not too much? and the ones that do have a long time interest (not me as I freely admit) shouldn't relate the small changes that have occurred? or should we all dummy up and stagnate the islanders income?

what the hell is wrong with a little whimsy?

Charles H, you've summed up the essence of Culebra -- and the people who love it -- so beautifully. Nothing more need be said.

May I say one more thing to all those on this board who outwardly express their love and devotion for Culebra and who patiently answer so many questions and concerns: Shame on you!

Jeez, I didn't mean to start a forum battle. But Muchas Gracias for all those who have answered my question.

BTW, IMHO, I'm visiting Culebra for the first time because my usual vacation spot, Akumal MX, is getting overrun with more and more tourists who think nothing of cranking their music on the beach, standing on coral, littering, treating the locals badly, etc. etc. But, there are too few places like Culebra left to not eventually attract the ill-mannered hordes. 10 - 20 years from now (or sooner) there will probably, sadly, be a cruise boat dock and corporate owned all inclusive 'resorts' on Culebra. Enjoy what you have while you have it. Of course, I could be, and often am, wrong.

"who's been there more times?"
"who was there first?"
"who knows more locals?"
"who remembers Sharky and Fidel?".

The answer to these and all other questions is "MJ". :-)

I doubt very much that this website will be the undoing of Culebra. Sadly, it will be the greed of those that should have known better in the first place. Those that didn't realize what they had until it was too late but didn't care because they lined their pockets with money derived from developments that should never had happened.

The folks on this forum don't fall into that category.

too bad about Akumel, a friend went to Playa del Carmen for intensive Spanish immersion classes last year and while said it's bit built up, had generally positive things to say (and you didn't start a 'forum battle' I'm a crank and don't deny it)

hey Mort - that room, en suite or bath down the hall?

Ah, now I get it. I think we need a very large room, perhaps even a conference room, so that get all of us can get together to thoroughly discuss this whole turtle and human trafficking problem. Perhaps they're related, and if so, the authorities need to know.

Might our little Culebrita become the new Somalia? At this rate, it's headed that way.
