What to Do While Waiting for Air Flamenco Flight
Culebra, Puerto Rico

My husband and I are anxiously counting down the days for until we arrive to quite possibly our favorite place on earth...Culebra. We are flying from Isla Grande to Culebra on Air Flamenco. We have about 4 hours to kill between arriving to Isla Grande and leaving for Culebra. Any recommendations on something quick and easy to do? We have spent time in San Juan in the past...so we are not really interested in sight seeing. Any convenient bars or restaurants for a good brunch/lunch on a Saturday??? Last year we waited at the small airport for the entire time and it kind of got a little boring. Any suggestions welcomed!

Until we meet on the warm sandy beaches of the most amazing place on earth...

Laura

I like the Playita Bar at the LaPlaya Hotel in Isla Verde. It's a 5 minute cab ride from SJU and about a 15 minute ride to Isla Grande. It is on Calle Amapola - cab drivers know it. They'll put your suitcase behind the desk. Open air beach bar that looks out over Isla Verde bay. There were a couple of manatees that would surface from time to time, but my last two visits were after dark, so I'm not sure, now...the pina coladas are made from fresh ingredients, macheted coconut anyone? The food isn't hugely remarkable, but they do serve a fine cheeseburger in paradise. Oh yeah, Buffet, Sinatra, and salsa on the jukebox. Say hi to Juanda from Doug!

The La Playa is our favorite "holding pattern" spot also. We have also stayed overnight there a few times when our flight was too late for last Culebra/Vieques connection. I have a picture of my family, taken by the bartender many years ago, on my desk at work. Enjoy.

Shawke,

The two bartenders I knew were Juanda, a lovely Senorita of, perhaps, 50, and Ciro, perhaps a similar age. Ciro used to crack himself up by trying to confuse me, saying, "I'm from North Carolina", which, pronounced slightly differently, was where we were sitting. My first vist to Puerto Rico in 1994 was spent mainly on the main island, staying with a friend two doors up on Amapola. He worked on weekdays, and I explored the neighborhood, having lunch at Playita most days. These two adopted me, and I've been back for a cocktail nearly every year since.

Doug
Ciro was the bartender who took our picture. I didn't remember his name until you mentioned the North Carolina reference. I remember him saying that to us also. I haven't been to Playita in a couple of years. Hope Ciro is doing well.

Orrrr here's another idea...friends of mine swear by the Ritz, up above SJU a few hundred yards...where you can eat lunch, and swim in their pool, and be treated quite cordially. Very lovely peaceful grounds too..

The Ritz is a nice choice. I stayed there a few days in 2005 when my sister was paying for it. Nice beachside restraunt. I did not know you could have use of their pools if you were not staying there. You could hit the casino there too.

How does the whole Ritz and pool thing work? We have a long layover on the way back home from Culebra. Day rates are surprisingly annoying and hard to find at a reasonable price (considering SJU is the biggest port of call in the Carib)

For Laura Y - if you don't might a quick cab to Isla Verde I'd go to Metropol for lunch. They have great Cuban/Puerto Rico food at very reasonable prices, the mojitos are good too! It's simple and humble and you can walk around Isla Grande when you are done (though there isn't much to see)

We always try to hit a different restaurant each time we can. I LOVE Metropol!

Last week, we went to Barrachina on our way back to SJU. It was excellent and very inexpensive for lunch (less than $30 with two beers and tip). Lewis had the mofongo stuffed with skirt steak ($8) and I had the steak sandwich ($7.50).

Happy Diving!

How does it work? act like you belong.

a few years ago a boss was in Istanbul and unhappy with her hotel so started calling the Ritz' concierge to arrange things for her.

nerves of steel (and a certain sense of entitlement)
