Dana, I'm not MJ, though we have striking similarities (mainly a very strange sense of humor). She will surely answer your questions.
I just want to say that you are going to the right place at the right time in your life, for all the reasons you mentioned.
The earlier you go in December, the better, because you'll have lots of options and you'll have time to scout around and make some connections so that you are well settled in to an inexpensive place before the jam-packed holiday season starts.
Best of luck to you. I have to warn you, though... more than a few people have come to Culebra for a month and ended up staying far longer!
