calmest beach
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I am planning on going to Culebra with my 2.5 year old daughter in November. Can anyone recommend what would be the beach with the calmest water and shade on the beach? Thanks!

I'd say Rosario

but with a toddler, even a stellar one, I dunno given the hike. (half-mile-ish up hill and down)

if you do, avoid the water at the entrance from the trail and go 20 yards past the rock and sea urchins.

otherwise it's a reef protected pool Vegas designers can only dream of.

if it's a low surf day Flamenco is cool, parts (Left, West) seem calmer than others.

There are sections of Flamenco (left of center when facing the water) that are very well protected by reefs. It's calm there even when the waves are large down the beach aways.

There are shaded picnic tables at Flamenco, only steps from the beach.

There is really no shade on the beaches other than the line of bushes and trees behind the beaches. If you don't want to sit under the bushes, bring an umbrella.

One of the calmest beaches we were at was Tamarindo. There is plenty of shade there too. I don't remember which of the two "Tamarindo's" it was but we got there taking the road to the Tamarindo Lodge/hotel (sorry don't remember the hotel name either but the road went in by the garbage dump.)

True that Tamarindo and Rosario are usually quite calm, but she has a toddler. I don't think I'd want to do that hike with a toddler. Plus those beaches aren't as sandy and rock-free as Flamenco.

For snorkeling, though, the opposite is true. Definitely worth the effort.

There are two Tamarindos, Grande and Pequeno. You don't have to walk to the one I'm thinking of, you can drive right up to the beach below the Tamarindo Beach Cottages. The beach is beautiful and the water is as calm as Luquillo on the big island - the downside is that if you look back when you are in the water, you can see the garbage dump.

In my first post there is an apostrophe in the word "Tamarindos". It should not be there as it is not possessive. If I put it there, I did it by mistake and apologize to any grammarians and punctuarians.

yeah this site is lousy with grammar nannies...

I was thinking the surf was calmer to the left at Flamenco, but I usu. go to the right so wasn't sure (fewer crowds)

Richard, there should be a comma after "yeah" in your first sentence! And maybe even a capital letter! Jeez!

You're right about the left being much calmer.

Arroz, I didn't know about the drive-up Tamarindo. Never been there. But I have seen the garbage dump from a sailboat. I agree with your advice not to look in that direction!

Try the old "shark pen's" on the far end of Flamenco. Don't worry about the name, they'r just two old rock jetty's sticking out from the beach with the space in between very calm. (usually) You can actually drive most of the way there instead of walking. Just ask around for directions for the correct road to take.

Go to the extreme right at Flamingo beach , its called "el muellecito" ask any local by that name.Is great for toddlers , I have a 21 month old baby and we hang with him there and he love it!! its really calm and sandy there

A bad day at the beach beats the hell out a good day at the job

Punta Soldado, out past Club Seabourne. It's a little rocky, but is usually calm and has some shade. Great snorkelling too.

Flamenco. No muss, no fuss. Drive in, take your group/baby darling down there. Look to the right if the surf is up, walk a bit. Perfecto. Enjoy.
