One of the calmest beaches we were at was Tamarindo. There is plenty of shade there too. I don't remember which of the two "Tamarindo's" it was but we got there taking the road to the Tamarindo Lodge/hotel (sorry don't remember the hotel name either but the road went in by the garbage dump.)
