Snorkel Locations
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Can anyone help me plan some logistic concerning my November trip? Please see my post under Culebra and Viesques. I am looking for a list of "must snorkel" locations. And some ideas of how to get there, can I charter a boat, or are the publicos (taxis, sorry about my spelling ) reliable? I can't walk far, or ride a bike due to Arthritis and a double hip replacement. I know I could rent a car, but that might be too complex/expensive for the short amount of time I'll have on Culebra. Any advice is very appreciated.
Thanks!

Hola! Great snorkeling at Carlos Rosario beach next to Playa Flamenco. The entrance to the trail is on the left hand side of the parking lot at Flamenco. It is a brisk hike, 15 to 20 minutes moderate hiking. If you hike slow, I'm sure you can make it, it will just take you longer. You can get to Flamenco by publico or via rental car, the roads are clearly marked or ask a local if you get lost. Publicos are reliable but, they stop working at about 5-6 PM unless you make arrangements with one of these and ask to be picked up at a certain time. Publicos are about $2, a bit more if they have to pick you up at a certain location and time. Look under the TRANSPORT section on this website to get more info on transportation alternatives. There is also good snorkeling at the muellecito at Flamenco. Just bear right, down the beach and you will see a torn down pier which will provide you with nice snorkeling. You can always charter a boat to take you to Culebrita or Luis Pena. Via car or maybe publico can also take you to Melones which I've heard has good snorkeling. If walking is an issue, the muellecito or old pier at Flamenco beach will provide you with fun snorkeling.
For activities at Vieques, look for info at a search engine under Vieques Puerto Rico or try these: http://www.elenas-vieques.com/ferry.html

I've also provided more info under your post Culebra and Vieques. Let us know if you have any questions, we are here to help!

I dunno about Rosario for Angelina's concerns unless she wants to boat it - and I'm no help there.

there are some nice things to be seen around Flamenco. I like the area near the "shark tank", and the daytime publico question isn't reliability. but capacity. I'd bet they return until no more fares - sometimes free market works.

ok I posted something useful. crap.

Melones is the best for "drive right up, walk right in". Most people can walk there from town, but I'm not sure you'd be able to due to the hills along the way. Melones has a rocky, although short, beach. My fairly spry mom, who has had a hip and knee replacement and several back surgeries, finds it very difficult to navigate rocky beaches.

Happy Diving!

Punta Soldado had great snorkeling and you can park very close to the beach. Another plus is shade! The road to the beach is a hard drive, but very doable.

The water taxis will drop you off and pick you up at Carlos Rosario. I used the one at Villa Boheme when I took my diasabled buddy there one afternoon. Allowed us to haul a large cooler and beach chairs, easily, too.

Yes, how much is a water taxi? Does any one have a guesstimate? And how about renting a bareboat? Where do I rent you, have seen that on any of the websites yet. At this point I think I am going to visit both Culebra and Viesques, just a matter of planning a the logistics. Do I rent a car or a boat? Currently it sounds like I should rent a car on Viesques, and a boat on Culebra.
And rely on the publicos. Also, any suggestions on accommodations? I really like the description and pics of Tamarind Estates. Again, thanks all for your help!

Hola! WOW! Tamarindo is the way to go, maybe on my next honeymoon! LOL!!! It's lovely, maybe one of our bloggers could tell you how was their stay there. If it's nice and you can pay, stay there, sounds like a lovely place. Let us know how was your stay if you end up there.
In "The Culebra Calendar" here are the numbers for the boats:
Acuaticos/WaterSports

Culebra Divers....................742-0803

Chris Goldmark/Bonefishg.742-0412

Culebra Boat Rental......... 742-3559

Ocean Safari Kayaks..........379-1973

Quarante Sail Charter.......349-0209

Tanamá Glass Bottom........501-0011

Aquatic Adventures...........742-0605

Culebra Marine Center.....742-3371

Guilín Fishing &Taxi..........314-6163

CulebraAnglers...........404-317-2896
Matbe you can reserve one of these at a good price to take you where you want.
We have never rented a car while on Culebra but, we can walk miles and relay just fine on publicos and our legs and the occasional hitch hike. If walking is an issue, then consider renting a car $45-50/day or maybe hiring a publico to pick up/drop off for the day. At $2-3 per person doesn't sound bad, you can always negotiate with them.
We stayed at Casita Tropical, Molly treated us like royalty and picked us up and dropped us off on departure day. Great place , Check out their website.
Happy travels! J

Unfortunately, Culebra Boat Rentals has closed. It is possible to rent a dinghy for use in Ensenada Honda only, but that won't get you to the beaches. Check the listing elsewhere on this site for that.
