Culebra vs. Viesques
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello,
My hubby and I are planning a trip to PR mid-October. I have been reading some of your threads, and you have a lot of great info, and interesting discussion going on here.
We love to snorkel. Been to St.John twice. Looking forward to this trip to PR. My biggest debate currently is whether to stay on Culebra or Viesques.
Where is the best snorkeling?
I am not overly concerned about hotel, and dining options. I just need a bathroom, a bed, and fresh water :) And any food that doesn't give you Montuzuma's revenge! The horses on Viesques remind me of St.John's donkeys. And I like the sound of both islands. A number of PR natives have been slanting me towards Viesques. Any and all feedback will be great appreciated!
Another option would be to stay on one island and just take a day trip to the other. But how would I do that? I have 6 or 7 days (not counting the Weds/Thursday I am arriving on and departing) and I would like to spend at least 2 days on PR mainland to see El Yunque. Also any advice about avoiding "crowds" as we are coming midweek and leaving midweek, the weekend is smack in the middle of the trip! Thanks

Hi Angelina,
There will be no crowds during the time you are visiting. Culebra is a little less developed and smaller than Vieques but both have great snorkeling as far as I know (only been to Culebra). You will definitely have more accommodation/restaurant options on Vieques, but there's no more beautiful beach than Flamenco on Culebra. I think you'll be happy with either island. You can fly between islands but it us ususally a charter situation, they need at least 4 or so people on the plane, otherwise you'll pay for those empty seats. Do ask questions and use the search option on both this and the Vieques forum. You'll love PR!

Good afternoon Angelina,
We looked at both islands before moving (from the British Virgin Islands) to Culebra. We liked that Culebra was a bit smaller & thus easier to get around. The snorkeling is nice here, esp. on the western side of the island. I've snorkeled in the S. Pacific & so I'm hard to impress & Carlos Rosario's reef surprised me (in a positive way) for Caribbean underwater views.

You can view many Culebra photos at http://culebrablog.com to get a better idea of what Culebra has to offer.

Hola! You could do all three areas, it's just a matter of logistics and how much time you want to spend in each area. El Yunque you could do in one day: http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/caribbean/, great website with lots of info. The best trail to hike is the Vereda Trail, which I've done many times, very scenic. It will take you anywhere from 1 1/2-2 hours depending on your pace and how many times you stop to take pics but, of course that's where you can see the famous peak El Yunque and during your climb or descend, you can see as far as Fajardo and surrounding areas. I could tell you volumes but, check out the website for yourself.
As far as snorkling, I think you can't beat Carlos Rosario at Culebra. From my own personal experience and what I've heard others write in this Forum, you can see a good variety of marine life and you don't have to go very far. It's just next to Flamenco beach, 15-20 minute hike. Culebra is a smaller island which means it's very easy to get around by publico or rental vehicle. You can visit most of the beaches in 2 days. Smaller also means more TLC from the locals.
Vieques being bigger means more time. There has been big publicity about "La Isla Nena" that even more and more of the locals are taking the ferry to check it out. The beaches are nice as well as good reviews from lodgings and places to eat. Never visited but I've seen many pics and have friends who say it's great. I'm sure you can find some on the internet.
Plan for things such as traffic or ferry delays, etc. You can see all 3 and do a scouting trip and then plan for a longer return for a future vacation or pick one or two places this time and promise yourselves to return later and see the rest. It's all beautiful, you have to return!
Happy travels! J

For me Culebra is tooooooooo best than Vieques for snorkeling and other thinks. The beaches are more beautifully and clean. In Vieque’s beach are a lot of algae and the sand it’s not white as the Culebra beaches are. Sorry for my English.
