How bout the turtles?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi, all.

I was wondering if turtles are viewable throughout the year while snorkeling. If so, what beach would be the best place to view them?

Thanks!
Gene.

When snorkeling at Tamarindo near the point, I followed a turtle around for awhile. It was January. And I'm serious. Deadly serious.

cool Mort.

DeGenester: there are groups that have led overnight vigils during egg-laying (and I think hatching) seasons to document the results, always sounded kind of cool if you're into fauna. I always mean to, but after dinner and a few drinks...

I seem to remember old threads on that subject here if you do a search.

once at Zoni I found a coupla hatched shells on the beach and on Flamenco in the dead of winter I was impressed that not only were the known nests generously cordoned off, but everyone gave them an additional wide berth of a good 10 or 20 feet when walking past.

amazing animals that can be ungainly and graceful at the same time.

I'd like to remembered by something to that effect.

ok this link is seriously sad:

I think he's asking about snorkeling, though.

As far as I know, turtles are always in the area year-round, but I'm no expert.

I only see one about one in five times, though. They aren't like llamas, which I see everywhere. Whoops... wrong thread.

Hola! I agree with Richard. I've seen turtles in and out of the water and they are awesome. We saw one at Carlos Rosario the very first time there, lucky I guess. Here are pics from a Culebra guest that I think are just amazing, scroll down to "Culebra Sea Turtle Hatchlings" http://www.blogcatalog.com/blogs/culebra-blog.html
If you see any turtles, post some pictures, also of any llamas too. OOPS, wrong thread! LOL!! Happy travels! J

Seeing a turtle is magical. I STILL haven't seen one, but that's my own fault for not going snorkling enough. Friends of mine see them every so often and I'm sorry to say I can't remember times of year, but it just seems to be fairly random.

Regardless, whatever I do see snorkling, spotted eagle rays, baby bright light fish, swaying corals...if you just have an agenda of *whatever I see I see* then there will be no disappointment and maybe magic will happen. It ain't Disney World, with time mandated sightings, but it's as real as it gets in its own way and absolutely lovely for that.

Wonderfully said.

And may I add, that if you are incredibly lucky in your timing when snorkeling, you just might see... MJ!

Oh, I just love sea life in general! I come from the desert - no sea life here! :) Arizona. I always enjoy snorkeling, and I hope to see all sorts of critters, MJ! I just would like to see some tortugas as well.

Thanks, all!

Gene.

MJ never shows her tortugas. At least not in public. Well, rarely anyway.

Mort, I don't believe I mentioned about MJ's tortugas... eesh. I don't know MJ, but I certainly DO KNOW that I hope NOT to see MJ's - or anyone else's - tortugas under the water..............

Sorry, I misunderstood. (heh heh)

Culebra is probably safe for you, but definitely avoid St. Maarten!
