I am taking my family to Culebra and i would like to know which is better, Diving or Snorkeling? And if both, what company of the island can you recommend money wise but most important one with many year of experience?

First... Diving is always better than snorkeling, all things being equal. That being said, I feel that the snorkeling experience in Culebra is nearly as good. And it's a LOT cheaper.

Diving is probably $70 per person, plus any rental equipment, plus tips. For a family, that's hundreds of dollars a day. Snorkeling is free.

I've snorkeled many places around the world, and I enjoyed Carlos Rosario as much or more than anywhere. But the diving is not nearly on par with the best places in the world.

Hence my family decided to snorkel instead of dive.

If you snorkel at Carlos Rosario, which is across the hill from Flamenco Beach (keep going on the trail past the first beach all the way to the second), the snorkeling is fantastic... Lots of coral heads, a good amount of fish, and nice variety of things to see, especially if you head out toward the mooring balls. And it's fun to go out to the point on the left, if the water isn't rough.

You'll love it.

We spent a week on Culebra mid-June with the goal of diving all day, every day. Mort is right. Snorkeling is cheaper and easier than dragging the gear around. Most of the good stuff is 30 feet or above anyway. Now, if you are interested in seeing larger marine life, you will need to go out away from shore. We saw turtles, rays and larger fish while diving, but nothing larger than a parrot fish while snorkeling. This may not always be the case, but that was our experience. Much sea life like the octopus, eels and shrimp are hidden under or in crevices so diving may be the only way to see them as it takes time to locate them. Unless or course you can hold your breath for a good amount of time.

We went to Culebra as diehard divers, but left enjoying the snorkeling almost as much. Personally, I still enjoy the ability to stay down longer and interact. While diving at Carlos Rosario, we came across a grassy area with 30+ large conch spawning, and an enormous lobster under a small boat wreck. Never would have seen that snorkeling.

We enjoyed our dives with Culebra Divers, but equally enjoyed the beach diving at Punta Soldado and Carlos Rosario, and both places are great for diving or snorkeling. Keep in mind, if you snorkel with you dive gear and go down only when you see something of interest, you can go all day on a tank of air. On our last dive at Punta Soldado, we snorkeled and dove for over an hour and came out of the water with over 2000 psi still in our tanks.

Mort is right, the southern end of Carlos Rosario is great snorkeling! We missed it, but somewhere against that wall, captain Bill said there is a hole that traps the incoming surf and resounds like an explosion. Have to check it out when we return again.

Snorkeling or diving, you can go wrong. Trent.

Very nicely described, Trent! I think that this thread will help a lot of people make up their minds.

I have never done a combo snorkel/dive to conserve air. That's a great idea, though it will only work for a shore dive. The dive boats aren't known for being patient! LOL.

Thanks Trent for the report. How far did you have to carry your gear to Carlos Rosario? I know you can drive right up to Soldado. Where did you rent your tanks? We will hopefully be doing shore dives on our own, plus boat dives with Culebra Divers and Taz. Only 9 more days and I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please post a trip report about your other impressions of Culebra, dining, where you stayed and what you thought of it and any other activities, favorite beaches. ETC. Thanks

Vicki, we dove Carlos Rosario from a boat so we didn't have to deal with the logistics of taking the gear there. We rented our tanks from the hardware store past the mini mas. I really enjoyed chatting with the woman there about their reef conservation efforts. If you have a chance, you might want to do the same. I think she was one of the owners.

If it's not too rough, try to get toward the south point of Punta Soldado. Good spot for spotting octopus if you're interested. We learned from captain Bill that if you see groupings of small dead conchs under a ledge or entrance to a hole, that it is most likely a home to an octopus. Punta Soldado is also one of the areas where they are trying to rebuild the reefs, and you can see the piles of Elkhorn all over. I'm interested to find out more information on the strategy behind what they are doing.

There is also great diving around the mooring balls just south of the landfill. (But in the water of course). Our first dive with Culebra Divers was at "the arch". It's a good relaxing dive and worth seeing. Mort is right, boat diving is pretty rushed. We were way off the no-deco charts because we didn't have enough surface interval.

9 days! I just got back but I'm still jealous. I posted some information about our trip on the "whatever happened to Trent" thread. I'll elaborate more on another thread. Our favorite beach, by far, was on Culebrita. I just can't imagine anything better.

I extend to you my greatest wishes on an excellent visit! Trent.

Longer surface intervals is one of the advantages of diving with Taz. Walter does tend to rush through his day. (But he points out cooler stuff than Taz.) :)

Happy Diving!
Debbie
