Ten best beaches in the world
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Unfortunately Culebra has been discovered. Trip advisor just listed the Top 10: Exotic Beach Destinations in the world and Culebra is second (first is Virgen Gorda).

Islands Magazine named Culebra one of the top ten islands on which to live. Shhhhhhhhhhhhh. Please.

Sorry to dispute your info Doug, but I was just reading my new issue of Islands and Culebra isn't listed this year in their 10 best islands to live on. I know your information is never wrong, so it was probably a typo or something, right?

Whenever I get this issue, I always frantically search through the lead article immediately to make sure Culebra isn't there---whew!! Safe for another year!

Their top ten this year are:
Palawan, Phillipines
Bequia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines
Vanua Levu, Fiji
Kangaroo Island, Australia
Eleuthera, Bahamas
Orcas Island, Washington
Singapore
Kauai, Hawaii
Ambergris Caye, Belize
Gozo, Malta

Last year Vieques was in their top 10 for the year though!!

I don't get Island magazine. Can you tell me what their criteria are for the list and the rankings? I sure would not have Ambergris Cay on the list.

Well, they say they research into the best islands for "inviting culture, enviable weather and available real estate." Each island is also shown the bullet points, called "Facts of Life" which include:
Climate
Population of island
Percentage expats
Population of main town
House starting rents/purchase
Travel from U.S.
Closest Hospital
Price of local beer
Languages
Ease of immigration
Easy of buying a home

But now I am intrigued, why wouldn't you have included Ambergris Caye? I have personally never been there, but have seen some good reports on it. Please dish!

Okay, we may be in trouble!! I just found out that Culebra is listed in the online version of Islands Top 10 Islands to live on. Also, I JUST got my mail and Culebra is listed in the "Word of Mouth" section of this month's Conde Nast Traveler. They mention Playa Flamenco, "The Spot" for lunch, "Susie's" for dinner and staying at Palmetto Guesthouse.

Maybe not many people will read it??

I think Ambergris Caye is quite quaint, but I don't know that I would want to live there. It's flat, and one would have to be right on the water (i.e., sea level, can you say "flood") in order to have a water view. The streets are all sand, and there are not many cars. There are really great restaurants. The official language of Belize is English. So, I can see some reasons why people would be drawn there. Me? I favor another quaint island. :)

Happy Diving!

In retrospect, I may have been unfair. In thinking about it I realized that we have been to Cay Caulker, the next island over from Ambergris Cay and a downscale version (but still part of Belize). The island is dedicated to tourists, again, perhaps not true of Ambergris Cay but not according to what I've read. Knowing that we like Culebra you can perhaps figure out what our standards are, warm water, beaches and laid back life style. There were no beaches on Cay Caulker and I suspect that Ambergris Cay is similar.

We have been to three of the islands listed and the only one is in serious contention with Culebra would be Bequia. It is the only one of the three with a decent beach (nothing compared to Flamenco) and good inexpensive food with lots of fresh vegetables and fruit. However, it suffers for being harder to get to than Culebra, has no decent snorkeling from the beach, and suffers from that dreaded disease, cruise ships. Of course, the ratings are for islands on which to live rather than to visit which includes the criteria you mentioned. I suspect that, a high percentage of ex-pats is probably a plus for them, it’s a minus for us. My wife and I both think that the “ex-pat” population in Culebra (not really ex-pat since you are still in the US of A) is not at all representative of the ex-pats we’ve met in our travels (e.g., we haven’t heard any ex-pats in Culebra moaning about the “natives” and how they are (a) slow, (b) undependable (c) all of the above).

Sorry about running on, perhaps slightly incoherently, I got carried away.

You know, Mr. Rice, I never thought about how different the "ex-pats" behave on Culebra as compared to other islands (let's face it - other locations - it doesn't just happen on islands), but you are dead-on! The Culebrense and the come-latelys do get on better than other places I've visited. They work cohesively together to preserve what they appreciate, and there seems to be no "us" and "them." It is refreshing, isn't it?

Ambergris Caye has a bit of a beach - long and narrow, and you can walk to and from restaurants on it. The beach is broken in half by a rather wide inlet; water taxis will take you to the other side of the inlet. It's not a bad beach, but not as great as some others I know. When we stayed there (on the beach), we walked right from our room to the boat dock to dive. That was great!

Happy Diving!

Thanks for all the info on Ambergris Caye. We saw an episode of "House Hunters International" from there and it looked interesting and I did a little digging on it. But, of course, if it's big enough and popular enough to be on national television, we figured we probably wouldn't like it there! And cruise ships are a definite deal breaker for us!

Having never had the opportunity to travel too much until my adult years, there are so many places I would like to see, but our hearts keep us going back to Culebra and using up all the vacations!! I am not complaining though!

Without the travel knowledge of others on this board, I appreciate the insight on the "ex-pat" relationships elsewhere. In my naivete I really had assumed that most places had the mutual respect, understanding and cooperation that Culebra's residents have. I should have know better!

Do cruise ships go to Ambergris Caye now? I haven't been been there since 2000. As a matter of fact, it's part of the "how we found Culebra" story - Lewis and I went on a fabulous/not-so-fabulous two-week trip to Belize (Ambergris Caye (fabulous) and the Mayan Mountains (super fabulous)) and Roatan, Honduras (not so fabulous). We arrived home a day late (seriously) and several dollars short (well, several cameras/wetsuits/snorkels/clothing items short due to theft) and there was a wedding invitation in our mail for this little obscure place called Culebra. We were a little jaded by our fabulous trip that wasn't so fabulous, and we tossed it aside. Did I mention the sea lice attack? A couple of weeks later, we got curious. And the rest is history.

I can't imagine what cruise ship passengers would find to do on Ambergris Caye - it's all about the diving, I think (that's all we did there)! But then, cruise ships go to Bonaire, and I find it pretty desolate as well - unless you're a diver!

Happy Diving!

Sorry, Debbie. The reference to cruise ships was for Bequia, not Ambergris Caye.

having perused Conde Nast Traveler a few times in Dr.'s waiting rooms and deduced the probable target demographic, I have doubts there will be a huge spike in visitors.

I suspect the average reader would think "how charming", daydream about it and then go to Aruba or the Bahamas.

Richard,

Never underestimate the rapacious appetites of the gentrifiers. My beloved Durango, CO, was an unspoiled gem in the early eighties, in the nineties, the 1st million dollar home broke the beautiful unbuilt ridgeline. In the early part of the new millenium the billionaires began to squeeze out the millionaires, and today, the last 19 square inches of undeveloped land in town was earmarked for "affordable housing" at $400K. Well, you get the idea.

God bless the Culebrenses, the ex-pats, and a special shout-out to CORALations, and their nurturing, educating efforts to hold the beast at bay.

good point and I should remember that while big cruise ships can't berth in Ensenada Honda there's always that demon of the "niche" cruise carrying 12 or less...

I do wonder though, if you're in the stratosphere of private jets, wouldn't a private island or at least one with private beaches make more sense?

I'll start by stating that I really do dislike cruise ships, of all sizes and shapes. However, when I think about it, it is not all bad. People on cruises spend money in the places they visit (usually to local merchants, taxi drivers, etc.), they go away at the end of the day, and, I have to admit that they do let me feel a little bit superior since I'm not a tourist on a cruise. On the other hand, people who stay at big expensive hotels don't go away at the end of the day and most of the money they bring seems to end up in the hands of the big multi-nationals who own the hotels.

Hopefully in Culebra we will not encounter either blight.

on the other hand small inns don't benefit and with dinner waiting on the vessel, neither do the local restaurants outside of maybe lunch or a few drinks (although I'm not one to turn down lunch with a few drinks).

I've never been on a cruise ship, but my wife has, a number of times with her mom and sister. They find the smaller cruises to be more interesting, and their welcome in port more robust than the few large cruises they've done.

I've been in Cane Garden Bay when several monsters were in, and the mobs of "sheeple" overwhelmed the entire beach, turning paradise into coney island. From the outside, looking in, Culebra has done just fine to this point without a cruise economy. I'd love to hear from Terri, MJ, Jim, and the others, since they're the ones who might be helped or hurt by these.

I'm inclined to think that a very limited (maximum once a week?) number of small (under 125 passengers), environmentally responsible operators might be OK, assuming they don't bring portable bars onto the island, as I observed on White Bay, on Jost. Selfishly, I'd prefer to keep all knowledge of Culebra from spreading, but I also want to see my friends and our hosts make a comfortable living.

We have friends who own restaurants/hotels/shops in the Cane Garden Bay area of Tortola (& other locals) who eschew the cruise ships. At some point there were some statistics done & they showed an average daily expenditure to be quite minimal, often with hoards of folks just stopping to use bathrooms of the restaurants, but not make any purchases.

Too, non-cruise tourists would try to avoid the known stops for cruise ship passengers, thus having lost business there, too.

Meant to add, that perhaps on the flip side some of the cruisers would then return to an island having "sampled" & liked what they saw.

I'm not sure the extra strain on the infrasturcture (water, trash, traffic) can keep up, however.

I have serious doubts cruisers would return on their own, my gut feeling is they'd just go on a different cruise next time.

having been (once, just once!) to Aruba it was interesting how the mood in town changed once the ships left.

my folks went on a small (maybe 30 people) cruise on the Aegean and that's the only thing I could imagine doing. not that I'll ever be able to afford it.

the fear as Doug points out are the type who think nothing of flying everything in - staff, supplies, friends (no asparagus on the island? call SJ! the airport doesn't have lights for night landings? what's 50K?) and price everything out of the reach of the people who serve the drinks and clean the rooms and teach in the schools.

my faith is people who move in that realm like to have exclusivity and the beaches on Culebra don't allow that. you can just buy or lease a fantastic villa elsewhere w/o the hassles.

I suspect (and hope) that that people in that set are more likely to go to Moustique than to Culebra

Hola! Just received my July copy of Conde Nast Traveler and on page 34 was the article about Culebra. It's in the section "Word of mouth" and describes the island as the new Vieques. The picture of Flamenco Beach is crappy, they could have done so much better. I've seen many of our bloggers pics (Debbie, Mort, etc) and they could have done a better job. They could have chosen a better model too, she takes up most of the picture, yuch!!! LOL!!! Congrats to Palmetto Guest House and the restaurants mentioned. For me it's still Casita Tropical and arroz con habichuelas and tostones at El Batey. Maybe I'll splurge the next time.
Changing the subject, what is with this guy from Casita Linda, Adolfo Criscuolo??? If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. If people have complained about your place, spruce it up and post current pics in your web page. As a beach condo owner myself, some people will complain about your place, take it with a grain of salt and analyze if you have to make some improvements. We did that last year after a mayor fuss from a snowbird guest and so far so good. Happy travels! J

nah, dumb it up unless the person is cool. only circulate B+W photos (send a jpg and I can dial out the color if you can't).

it's our fault that people know about this place. but any income source for the year-rounds is to be congratulated.

Hola! No big thing but, I've been reading old postings about Casita Linda in some of the topics. I don't know if the owner of this place had a misfortune with past guests (look under Casita Linda Apartments topic). It's his fussing, he posts repeatedly. He should just update his site and move on.
Happy travels! J
