Balcones de Melones
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Planning a short trip and a stay at this studio. anyone know anything about it? I plan to spend most of my time in one of Jim's kayaks anyhow so basic is fine. How long a walk to town? Is a scotter worth renting?

Is there a good place for bicycle rental -- even though I know that hill between melones and town is pretty steep, I need to transport some groceries.Who rents bicycles?

Bike Steve - http://www.culebrabike.com/

Walk to town from there should be about 20 minutes.

Happy Diving!

Sort of related. We were told by someone, can't remember who, that we should shop for groceries on the mainland and bring them to Culebra. Do we really need to do that? How's the local market? We were laughing how after paying for the groceries, then the extra pounds on the flight, and the hassle, that $3 apple better taste pretty darn good.

21 days and counting! Trent.

I wouldn't bother buying groceries on the mainland, Culebra has at least 3 small grocery stores, besides, ya wanna support the Culebra folks. Local markets are fine and so are the restaurants.

2 days and psyched!

2 days? I'm jealous. Good to hear about the local stores. I'm all for supporting Culebra businesses.

21 long days and counting. Trent.

Bosie, I'm jealous, too! And I agree completely about doing your groceries on Culebra. The prices aren't that much higher than the mainland, and the selection is certainly adequate.

The only thing that people might want to bring with them is stuff that isn't easily found, such as a favorite brand of energy bars. Those are pretty handy, especially for camping.

If you're there on a Friday and you're into veggies, be sure to visit the veggie stand at the intersection of the three roads at the airport. They set up around 8'ish and have a very good selection.

Happy Diving!

We stayed at Melones Beach House for 2 months. I'm pretty sure that it is right below the Balcones. We had bikes too. For just getting in and out of town we found it easier to walk than to bike. It is a 10 minutes walk, max. The bike ride is either straight up or straight down - maybe 10 feet of level road. To carry groceries and beer we used a back pack.

Grocery shopping is certainly one of my favorite things to do on trips away from home. It gives me the chance to mix and talk to the locals, eat new things and have interesting adventures, especially if you don't know the language. A couple of places to pick up groceries while on Culebra. Definitely go to the fruit and veggie guy Debbie mentioned, he's very nice. Everything fresh on his cart, some even organic and grown using hydroponic techniques (tomatoes). Garage Ricky across from the dock (at the gas station) has ice and libations. There are also grocery stores Colmado Milka, Colmado Genesis, Superette Mayra where you can find most food items and personal essentials (colmado is a small food store). There are Panaderias (bakeries) which make bread, sweets and great Puertorrican coffee. At the kiosks at the entrance to Flamenco beach you can get great local food super cheap. Of course there are many restaurants of which you can choose from. You sure you want to come back after this trip to Culebra? Let us know of your adventures. Happy travels! J

You won't want to come back home, you'll see! Culebra is so beautiful. easy going way of life, you won't want to come back home. Next thing you'll be doing is constantly looking at your vacation pics, putting them on your computer for a screen saver, trying to cook those delicious pinchos (chicken on a stick) on your BBQ and arroz con habichuelas (rice with stewed beans) you ate at the Flamenco beach kiosks. Pina coladas for breakfast, papaya smoothie for lunch and rum cocktails for dinner. Don't forget salsa dancing into the night. Happy travels! J

That's what worries me, Jeannie! I have already fallen in love, and I haven't even been there yet. My third love that is. (God, my wife and kids, and Culebra). I sit at my computer and hover over the island (Goole Earth) exploring as much detail as I can. Some days I will wake out of my trance and feel as if I've just returned from a visit. I'm sure that pales in comparison to actually being there! You guys are the only thing keeping me going until we arrive. Otherwise I may have already gone loopy.

Unrelated. How's the fruit down there? I was in Costa Rica last year (my first trip out of the states) and couldn't believe how amazing the fruit was. I now know what a banana is supposed to taste like. And the papaya, and the mangos, and the pineapple...

17 days and counting! Trent.

I'm trying to update my profile. I feel I am on a first name basis now, if that's alright. I am not computer savvy at all, and don't quite understand all the profile information. Why are all your names followed by cool stuff, and I just have numbers? Do I need to have a certain number of posts to reach an elite status? Or say something stupid? Oh wait, I think I already fulfilled that qualification several times already.

17 days and counting! Trent.

Hola Trent! The fruit is awesome! Some of these were the fruit the tainos (native Puertorricans) would grow and eat: mamey: looks lika a gigantic kiwi and you can eat it raw, smoothie or ice cream, guanabana (soursop) nice and refreshing; papaya, guayaba (guava) need to eat this one when it's nice and ripe, very sweet. It's also made into a paste, jelly really good. Mangoes, I'm not sure when they're in season, nice and sweet, also made into a paste and jelly. Others are fruit you can find in the US oranges, grapefruit, lemons both green and yellow. There are chironjas, cross between grapefruit and orange, limonjas, cross between lemon and grapefruit and naranja cross between lemon and orange. Many kinds of avocados, big size, not the little Hass kind you see in the US. You will probably arrive in quenepa season, little and round covered by a peel, fleshy and sweet inside. Parcha (passion fruit), acerola (a type of cherry), tamarindo (tamarind), carambola (starfruit), jobo (these are smelly), a couple variety of guineo (banana) and I'm probably missing a few. The great thing about PR fruit is you can try them raw and other ways. Puertorricans are so creative in the culinary arts that you can find many of these in ice cream, jellies, paste, juices and even cooked with meats, poultry and fish. And that is just fruit! LOL!! Make sure your clothes have elastic or drawstring, you're probably going to come back with a few pounds. Happy travels! J

Debbie, 15! You're absolutely correct. I've got it bad! But, on the good side, it has led to my most recent invention. It's this cool little bucket I can attach to my ear lobes and let hang under my chin. It's not so pleasant for those around me, especially when I need to empty it, but hey, it works.
Jeannie, thanks for the fruit drool, and I do look forward to eating while there. But, no I will not be gaining any weight. Sigh. I'm a stick, and haven't gained or lost a pound since high school. My wife hates me for it. I've even tried wait gain diets with massive lifting and carb shakes. I only gained gas, not pounds. Personally, I love it (not the gas, but the eating) and will try everything on Culebra at least once.

15 days and counting! Trent.

is Balcones de Melones the same as Villa Melones?

if it is a stunning view, great decks, but you'll soon tire of that last hill (a struggle with a jeep in 1st gear)

I know a few years have passed since this thread was last posted but I'm curious about whether Gary actually ended up staying at Balcones and what it was like? I had heard that it is a cold water flat. Is this correct?
