Nice Place to Stay
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We are looking for a great place to stay for 4 adults and a couple of small kids in November. We stayed in Culebra about 5 years ago in a not so great place, and are looking for the best Culebra might offer . Can be a house, or a villa. Price is not all that important, but we do want a place that is clean, good views and relatively new. Thanks

I don't know where you stay the first time you came to Culebra, but I recomend you to try Bahia Marina.

Thanks...after some time searching the web, I found Bahia Marina. Agree it looks like the place to stay on Culebra. When we were last at Culebra, we stayed at some villa that overlooked Ensanada Bay, but it was nothing special. Cant remember the name of it, but it was not real comfortable. Of course we were almost 10 years younger so we could put up with it. We dont need a real plush place, but we are older than many who visit Culebra I would guess so we like the little amenities, and are willing to pay for them.

I like the idea of having a pool right there in case you dont feel up to going to the beach. Since we were last on Culebra, we have spent some time at Vieques and stayed at a place with a pool, so that is good.

I've read some reports of Club Seaborne and many have not been good. Sounds like they need to do some upgrading, and their website does not do it justice. I would just as soon not get a bad surprise.

I looked at Costa Bonita too, though does not look as good as Bahia. Anyone here seen both places?

Has Culebra changed much in the last 10 years?

You must have stayed at Villa Boheme. That's the first place we stayed when we started going 8 years ago. Over the years, we've rented various dwellings from Jim Galasso at Culebra Island Realty.

Costa Bonita is not recommended by most people. This post says it all:

Appreciate the heads up on Costa Bonita Debbie. That one is definitely ruled out. Too controversial for me. I will look over the houses for rent. Maybe I can find something reasonable with a nice pool. We've stayed at the Inn on the Blue Horizon in Vieques a couple of times, but we were disappointed with it the last time we were there. I guess if you have a great visit the first time you shouldnt return or you'll be disappointed when you go back. Was not happy overall with Vieques either. Maybe it was the beer can thrown at our vehicle or the one week sickness I got whille there.

We're beginning to make plans for a November vacation in Culebra. We will plan to rent a vehicle, but how far of a walk would you say it is from Bahia into town? Might make for a good stroll if not too far.

Thanks to both of you for the help so far!

Too far for a stroll, far enough for a hike. Bahia Marina will be very comfortable though. You can also call Vacation Planners, they have some great homes...some in town but most that would fit your group a little farther out, where renting a car would be advisable. And there are other holiday home providers as well, as you'll see if you check out the pages for that or just google culebra places to stay.
What I seem to find with visitors who end up loving Culebra is; if you find a good enough place to stay the first time, you'll learn so much for your next visit, just because you'll meet people who will tell you. Lots of the lesser known places you'll find out about when you get here...some are about how many people you have, some about pricing, you just have to get here to figure out what is important to you.
Some people want a water view and to not leave that place much. Some don't mind being in a barrio with comfort and no water view because they get out a lot.
To get *everything* the first time...well, if you find you love Culebra, it won't matter much where you end up, you'll figure it out for the next time :)

This place has a pool (disclaimer - friends of mine!) You would need a car as it's high above town, but it's nice and peaceful. The view is of the bay and you can see Vieques on a nice day.

Well that looks pretty good too. I found the name of the place we last stayed at in Culebra. It was Culebra Island Villas. They seemed kind of run down to us and there was a mile of stairs to climb to get to our unit. It was functional but that was about it.

This is a great forum and isnt as dead as some of the other ones you run into. Very helpful.

I think this time we might fly into Culebra. We have always taken the ferry but because of the flight arrival time, it requires us to stay in San Juan or Fajardo for a night (usually get into San Juan mid afternoon). Maybe we can find better connections and get there earlier since we will be leaving from a different airport this time around.

Larry , Culebra has have some changes in ten years, I've been coming to Culebra since 1991, but you're gonna see changes in the main port, there are like 10 new restaurants, I remember there was no paved road to zoni beach 8 years ago or so, now the road is almost paved, now in Flamingo beach you're gonna see people selling ,water, pizza,"pinchos",sodas Etc. I don't remember them 10 years ago, I can say there been some changes, but at least for me, the charm of the island is still the same!!

David...we're looking at the second week in November right now. I made a a few calls today...one to Bahia to check on rates. They're asking $151 a night for a single bedroom ....also checked into some flights to and back from San Juan. It looks like the flight back would leave around 10:30 so I'm not sure I would have enough time to fly out of Culebra that morning. Seems like it would be tight especially with security the way it now. Looks like its publico to and from Fajardo, spend the night there then hop on the ferry. Trying to avoid the ferry on the weekend. I hear getting a weekend ticket could be a big problem, so will probably do a thursday to thursday kind of thing.

Wow...sounds like some changes in Culebra. Last time there it was only a Tiki hut (great burgers :)) at Flamenco. And there was only a handful of restaurants. More choices I guess is better as long as the island doesnt become too commercialized.

Casa Del Sol is a great place to stay. It is on top of the hill next to Club Seabourne. It is across the road from Bahia Marina. It has views of Ensenada Honda and over the top of the eastern part of the Island you can see St. Thomas in the distance out of the front of the house. On the back deck there is Cayo Luis Pena and spectaclar sunsets over Puerto Rico. It is a good size house it has 4 bedrooms, large kitchen and living room and all the gear you need. The only thing you need is a jeep. You Can get more info on http://www.homeaway.com/search/keyword:101515 and you can email the owner from there.
