I just wanted to say sorry to all the people of Culebra who had to deal with the cruise ship last week. I can understand your disgust for the ordeal as when my husband and I visit Old San Juan every year for the 4th of July parade we immerse ourselves into the culture and can always tell when the cruise has docked because we see the cruise passengers as outsiders even though technically we are too but we enjoy being part of the locals and would never trade that!

If they would at least get their facts straight.

The New York Times
http://travel.nytimes.com/2008/03/28/travel/escapes/28culebra.html?ref=travel
(they own the Tribune) quotes the flight from San Juan as $32 one way. Guess where we will have a lot of flight questions ;)

Not even mentioning the fact that they cannot be bothered - in the Times no less - to check whether 'Culebrense' is indeed a plural word, or come to realize that it is actually singular! They were talking to Laurie for Christ's sake! They should know all the ins and outs of Culebra!

On the other hand it is articles like that that do keep the Culebrenses' pockets filled and therefore the big developers away (less likelyhood of 'selling out'), so let's take it all with a grain of salt :)

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael

" A sign tacked to a handicraft vendor's cart that reads "Open Some Days/Closed Others" pretty much sums up the island's free-spirited ethos."

I'd sue for infringement.

my first reaction was "oh crap" but the article was clear that the crowd who expects room service will not be happy.

You know what is really funny Richard... my husband emailed me the link and his subject was oh crap they found it....

To Michael, I thought that was very cheap to fly out of San Juan. I thought that would be to fly out of Fajardo since it is closer.

Is the ex-Jersey resident mentioned in the article on this forum??? If she is, where did you live? I'm currently living in Somerset County, NJ which is actually pretty nice.

I showed the article to my DH and he said that maybe we'll make it another Jersey family moves down there - then I corrected him that he's originially from Jersey but I'm not :)

We're really looking forward to being down there even if only for 24 hours!

Hedily,

We are from Jersey too. Cherry Hill area, South Jersey.

Gina & Sal

I think they said that one of the housekeepers at Club Seabourne is from Jersey.

The woman they mentioned in the article actually was from Somerset County but no longer lives there. If she posts she can tell you where she is now.

I am originally from New Brunswick NJ.

Know Somerset Area well.

There is no such thing as a bad vacation. Some are just better than others.

Hi Gina, Sal & Tricia from cold Jersey. It's in the 40s and windy so it feels much colder.

I'd rather be down there but I'm really looking forward to visiting in a few days. I was born in Fajardo but reared in Alabama and now I'm in Jersey since my hubby is from here.

I live in Hillsborough and actually like it.

Tricia - I used to go to New Brunswick alot in my previous job but I haven't been in a while.

Hopefully we'll run into one of you while we're visiting - I'm planning on eating at Mamacita's on Friday night (April 4th)- any other places we can go for drinks which are "family friendly" since our 10 & 8 years daughters will be with us.

Hedily

Hedily,

My husband was just in Hillsborough yesterday at the accountants office on 206.
We will be in Culebra on June 29 and staying for the week.

My husband and i had the best burgers at mamacitas. We also enjoyed the company of the iguanas.

Have fun! Your count has already begun!

Gina

I think the general feeling here was, glaring mistakes aside, they made us sound about as low key as possible and wanting very much to stay that way.
I have asked Laurie to do my laundry during any of her future visits.
Also I also now have the answer to what I do...this has eluded me since I bought the cart! Handicraft vendor is so much more succinct than...well, I hang out on the corner and read a lot and talk to people a lot and sometimes sell stuff...of course, it also sounds like I may be selling brooms that blind people make...which could be a good addition; I loved those brooms and you can't get them here. Hmmmmm.
I really liked the Gailin quotes!

MJ, you might look into putting "resourceful itinerant" on your CV.

In re-reading my post, I think, maybe the feeling that I thought the article was harmless, which is a big deal to me and very much a positive, didn't come across. Expectations based on articles like that make for happier visitors, happier us.

I think we're in agreement on that,

it was good that the writer made it clear that this ain't footservice.
