FERRY UPDATE!!!
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: Jeannie G3 (---.asm.bellsouth.net)

Hola! As of today, Wednesday, March 19, 2008, ALL ferries to Culebra and Vieques round trips are suspended until further notice. I just saw it on the news 11:30 AM. The weather out at sea is very rough and all sea warnings have been extended until Friday, 2 PM. Call Fajardo Port or Culebra Port if you can at the numbers I posted under the ROUGH WEATHER topic and ask the locals for advice what to do to get to the mainland or to Culebra during these days (if you can). Good luck visitors, stay safe!! Happy travels! J

Juan Cirino, Executive Director for Port Authority in Fajardo ( Director Ejecutivo de la Autoridad de Transporte Maritimo) has informed that if you have a ferry reservation for today Wednesday, March 19 or for tomorrow, they will reimburse you but, you have to go to the ticket counter at Fajardo Port. Again, ferries are canceled until further notice. The phone numbers Mr. Cirino gave for further info are 787-801-0250 extension 221, 222, 230, and 234. You can always fly, just make a reservation ahead of time. This bad weather is only at sea. Happy Travels! J

I just checked at the ferry dock & they said that ferries for today (Weds) are cancelled, however beyond today folks will need to check as it will depend on the seas.

I haven't been able to confirm but, I think the ferries are still canceled today Thursday, March 20. Someone on Culebra could probably find out for sure. The weather out at sea is still dangerous and they have even canceled the other ferry system between San Juan and Catano today Thursday. The 3 airlines operating form the airports to Culebra are jam packed with waiting lists. MN Aviation which operates from Luis Munoz Marin and Isla Grande has 3 trips today and is opening a fourth from Fajardo. Vieques Air Link from Isla Grande has a waiting list of 100 persons and Isla Nena 200. I'd suggest calling ahead, making a reservation if you can and have patience. It looks like the ferry system will be up and running by tomorrow Friday afternoon. Be careful on the beach, waves and currents are still dangerous. Happy Travels! J

This extreme high tide event should begin to subside tomorrow, Friday after 2PM when the tides have reached their peak and conditions at sea get better. The forecast for Easter Sunday are scattered showers, temperature of 83. Waves will be between 4-6 feet high for that day, take precautions if you are in an inflatable boat or are out snorkeling. It should be quite lovely as showers do not last very long because of the trade winds so, yes I would definitely recommend going ahead with your plans to Culebra. Be sure to check local forecast, wapa.tv , click on "El Tiempo". Happy travels! J

why aren't the airlines taking advantage of this? I know a lot of people who would pay whatever it costs to get to the island now! They could fly three times as often - if they wanted to ;)

Enjoy Culebra!

AHHH, that is island life for you, VERY laid back. I have asked myself that question many times, not only about Culebra but, about the rest of the island as well. I don't want to open another can of worms and get the answers I received the last time: "Since when did "progress in tourism" become the goal for Culebra?", "Culebra can only support so many visitors at a time and sometimes that number gets overwhelming for our infrastructure.", If Myara's or the Superetta are out of what I'm looking for, well there's always tomorrow", and so on. So what if you have been planning your vacation to Culebra for months, have paid reservations for hotel and rental car, arrive to Fajardo only to find out that the ferry has been canceled due to inclement weather and to fly over to the island it's going to cost you $50-60 but you can't because there are 100 people ahead of you on a waiting list in the same predicament! Of course, this can happen to you anywhere anytime, but if you are stuck in Fajardo or Culebra you are stuck. Or they could increase the number of flights in and out... The only airline I know of that added 1 flight to their itinerary was MN Airlines out of Fajardo. That's life in Puerto Rico for you. Happy travels! J

It's a beautiful, sunny, breezy day in Culebra today. There are extra flights going in/out & guests of ours who were supposed to come on the 9am ferry are arriving by plane around 2:00.

Other guests have been swimming at Tamarindo & Melones on the "protected" side of the island where the waves are not big like on Flamenco. Flamenco had many folks out enjoying the sun & the sights & there were soccer/vollyball/football games in the sand. No one in the water there today, though.

Definately worth still coming!

I bet you Dakity is nothing like it usually is during Semana Santa!

Jeannie, this and so many oyther things are the reason that I tell people to come for more time!! You cannot 'get' Culebra by coming for a couple of days. I have missed the ferry, the plane and the pu'blico to the ferry and still made it - man~ana ;)

Enjoy Culebra!

Just got an update on the ferries. There is still no ferry service for passengers, however the cargo ferry was operating early this morning to take supplies over to Culebra. They sometimes take passengers back with them to Fajardo, do inquire if you need to desperately get back to the mainland. Culebrenses, any news about what's happening? Happy travels! J

It looks like tomorrow things *may* get back to what we call normal, which means we're not sure what will happen, especially as there is a backlog on people (and cargo) in and out. It's all about the weather, ya know. But...I did want to add this.

There were quite a few business people who thought they'd be on holiday today, who were instead taking in provisions from the one cargo ferry that arrived...I don't know if Heather got her pizza dough (Heather's Pizza_, but I know Susie (Susie's restaurant) got some things...some on one truck, some on another. Hector and Sandra (Milka's colmado) came in and I'm sure said, sorry! to 249 people who thought they were open. Apparently Sandra did sell some ice though!

As a person who depends on the in and out of tourists, I should have been, perhaps, a bit more bothered by the lack of visitors, but I have to say, the quiet was kind of nice. Great tourists putting up with being here (putting up with basically lovely weather, good people, etc. oh the trials! of an extra 2 or 3 unexpected days - yet I know they were spending more than planned; we all know the *end of holiday* feeling, especially on the wallet) with good humour, good attitudes.

Not so many vehicles (no gasoline, ya know). Include today being Good Friday so a lot of places were closed. I didn't hear ONE gripe or groan today, just "Do you know what MIGHT be open to get some ____?" sort of questions. Somehow, this bit of adversity went over well. Overall, we have pretty awesome tourists here, and that showed in these last few days of weird.
Sweet.

The newscast said that the ferries to Culebra and Vieques will restart today, Saturday, March 22 at 9 PM, weather permitting. There is a ferry from Culebra to Fajardo that sets sail at 1 PM. The cargo ferry set sail today at 4 PM. Any news from Culebra?? Happy travels! J

The gas got in at 6, the people got in at 11. We're about back to normal here...given it's Culebra ;) The gas lines were long but moved pretty quickly; even those who waited got gas...well, so far, so good. So Semanta Santa is ON!
