Isla Nena Airlines
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We flew Air Flamenco last year out of Isla Grande and had no problems; however, it appears that they are offering only one flight out of Culebra at 3pm and the latest flight I can get out of San Juan is around 4:30pm. Has anyone flown Isla Nena? The information I can get is that they offer 3 flights out of Culebra and fly from San Juan airport. Any pros/cons on Isla Nena Airlines? Thank you!

Air Flamenco offers a 7am flight to Isla Grande airport. Recently was booked on that flight. When we got there someone mentioned there was an 11am fight. I went to the airport and he had a plane coming in that had to fly back to Isla Grande and it would be empty. We got on that flight. I would book the 7am and maybe there will be a slightly later flight back. My understanding is that Isla Nena has not been consistant. In fact when ever I was in the Culebra airport I never saw anyone there from Isla Nena nor did I see a flight come or go. I would stick with air flamenco or Vieques.

Call Air Flamenco and ask if they have any other flights. They might add another flight if the demand is there. Its worth a call.

Donna,

They do have other flights - 11am for sure. Probably they are just booked. What date are you flying? A busy weekend in March or July? I agree with Tricia that your best bets are Air Flamenco and Vieques Air Link. If you have to leave the island at 7am, I would recommend taking the 7am ferry. It's usually not crowded, and it's a beautiful sight to see the sun come up over Culebra as you're leaving. Then, you can spend some time sight-seeing in Puerto Rico before catching your mainland flight.

The 7am ferry would be the cargo ferry & doesn't run on the weekends. The passenger ferry gpoes at 6:30am daily.

Hi all.

Long time reader, first time poster. Hopefully, first time culebra visitor 5/13-5/19.

Just a quick logistics question:

My gf and I are planning to fly from Boston to SJU, cab it to Isla Grande, and hop a flight. Here's the thing:

Our flight from Boston arrives early (10:15ish), which ideally would allow us to get to Culebra early.

But, since it seems none of the On Demand services from SIG seem to have a posted schedule, I have this fear that we will end up sitting around an airport all day, waiting for a flight to fill up, and we would have been better off hiring a driver from SJU to Fajardo, and catching an afternoon flight or ferry there.

*Is it unrealistic to think we can get from San Juan to Culebra in, say, under 3 hours total?

*Should I just call the different airlines and ask for approximate scheds.?

*Should I make reservations now, or just wait 'til we get to Isla Grande and try to get the next available flight from the next available airline?

*Should I just suck it up and cough up the extra $$$ to fly Isla Nena from SJU for a more dependable schedule?

Thanks.
Andy in Boston

I think you're misinterpreting "on demand". There is a schedule - they know ahead of time what times they are flying (I think there is a 1 or 1:30 flight). They have more flights at busier times of the year. Call and talk to them - basically, it works the same as any other airline. Isla Nena is not any more dependable than Air Flamenco (my first choice) or Vieques Air Link.

Thanks for your help!

I suppose i had this idea that "on demand" meant they would leave whenever they had a full plane. Glad to hear it will be much easier than I had feared.

Hello Andy,
We're originally from Boston, too (however escaped the cold winters many years ago...).

In any event, as mentioned above, the taxi to Isla Grande & then Flamenco (787-721-7332) or Vieques Airlink (888-901-9247) is the easiest route.

We always recommend advance reservations.

If you tried to drive/taxi to Fajardo & then ferry over you could catch the 3pm which would get you to Culebra 4-4:30.
