campground revisited
Culebra, Puerto Rico

So I got someone on the phone at the campground office just now and she said that I didn't need to worry about a reservation during holy week. Any one have any thoughts on that?

My understanding is that they don't turn people away. There is room for a huge number of tents, as long as you don't mind a tent being 4 feet away.

It is unbelievably crowded that week, but also very festive. It is definitely not the time to go if you want to "get away from it all".

Bring earplugs and a sense of humor!

We are ready for the festivities, and if we wanted to get into Area E, do you think that is a problem. The lady on the phone was very nice but wasn't able to answer alot of questions, she just kind of went along with whatever I said and I want to try to get into that Area. Both my brother and sister have camped in Area E and said that is the best as far as not being too crowded. I'm not sure that will make a difference during Holy Week, huh?
Thanks!

E will be better than the others, for sure. But now that the showers are working again, it will be more crowded than it would have been otherwise.

Just ask them for E when you arrive. They tend to try to save it for mainland Americans.

Naturally, the earlier you can get there before the actual weekend, the better your choices will be.

Good luck and have fun!

Because the Americans tend to want a more sedate camping experience.

The campground officials try to put the locals in A, B or C.

It doesn't always work out that way, though. Owlihoot told me by email that there was an extremely loud group of locals in E during one of the weekends she was there this month.

I should also add that there was an extremely loud group of Americans in E one of the nights I was there.

I'm just relaying what the campground attendant told me about how and why they try to assign people to the sections.

Now that's funny! "Let's stick the mainland Americans all the way in the back so they won't bother the Puerto Ricans" LOL!!

Hope no one is offended by this post - it really is all in good humor.

Happy Diving!

I read it the other way around...Puerto Ricans at the campgrounds often tend to come in big family groups during holiday times...I always want to be adopted when I wander through the campground.
We Americans are the ones who want peace and quiet (and running water, electric outlets, propane grills, within 3 minutes of a mall but somewhere OUT THERE in the wilderness...with none of those pesky wilderness things like mosquitos, snakes and bears...oh...you all didn't know about the bears! Oopsy!).

I'll be sure to bring my bear canister and spray!!! No, I hope I didn't sound too typically American, and I am excited for all the festivities of the week. It's just that my fiance and I may want a little "privacy" every now and again (wink wink). I'm not too worried about showers, etc, I just want some sandy beaches, some sun and the tropical waters, beyond that, my expectations and desires are few. Thanks for all the info, I'll see ya'll in less than a week!
