Cooking on flamenco beach?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Me and a group of guys are going to be camping on Flamenco beach this March and were wondering what we need to bring to be able to cook. We plan on living off mostly rice and meat that we will buy from town. Once there, will we need to buy coals and lighter fluid? I assume we have to buy water for boiling because I've heard bad things about the tap water. Also, are there any facilities with electrical outlets that we could maybe use to plug a hotpot into?

Basically I just need to know what equipment we should bring/buy to cook meat and boil water. Thanks!

Hi,

check the shelter section $ on this site, there is a phone number for the campground office. They might be able to give you some of this info.

Good luck!

Hello,
I just got back from camping two weeks ago. I had a portable stove and a cooler with food. All I needed was ice once in a while. I dont know what kind of cooler you have but mine held the ice for about two days no promblem. It's really easy to get ice. The taxi will take you and bring you back for about 4 bucks a trip.

Hmm, can we buy styrofoam coolers there anywhere? I am more curious as to how I am going to cook the rice we're bringing. We arent bringing a stove but can buy coals, lighter fluid etc. I just dont know what to expect :)

I think you should think its a camping. You dont have to get rice. just take with you a grill, some hamburgers and hot dogs, and a lot of alcohol. Suggestion: take repelent for flies.

no open fires at the campground. there is a charcoal cooking pit at each campsite you can use to grill/cook, getting a pot of water to boil over charcoal on a windy day may be a bit of a challenge. but we did not bother.

A real nice lady has a booth at flamenco, daily. rice/beans & porkchops or chicken, fish. big plate of food for $5.

Is there a place to buy charcoal or a cooler if we need one?

there is a great supermarket in town that sells styrofoam coolers, charcoal and pretty much everything. it's the only big supermarket so anyone should know where it is. be aware of its operating hours though.
