How much...
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Ok...we have to have some what of a budget when travelling...I like to know what to bring as far as what we will need...

Used to budgeting about $80 a day max for everything...what can we expect on Culebra? Will $80 a day for 2 of us do it or do we need to figure on more...we usually budget low as we just aren't the type to spend much and the less we spend per day the longer we can stay :) But, we don't want to figure not enough.

Advice?!

What does "everything" encompass?

everything..all of my favorite things about this type of vacation...things to do with relaxation, lol...that would usually consist of any daily activities...but more on the end of food...we like to get things at a store to make our own breakfast usually...usually do supper out at someplace that smells / looks good...so basically wondering what you spend on average for a meal out for 2 people...from the low end to the high end....and how the prices are at the market?

Once your lodging and any transportation is taken care of $80 will make for a lovely day. The more you cook for yourself, the lower this number will be. Prices aren't that much different than mainland. Eating at the criolo places and kioskos will save money over the more Americanized places.

Jen, I still don't understand!

Are you saying that $80 just has to cover food and entertainment? Not transportation or lodging?

If you are camping or cooking your own food, $80 is living high!

But if you like to eat out every meal and drink heavily, it's not enough for two people.

Culebra isn't a strange and foreign world. It has grocery stores and restaurants with items you're used to, at prices that aren't THAT much different than the U.S. Just the selection is less, that's all. And the restaurants are not high end, but they're clean, fun and have good food overall.

At the low end of the cost spectrum are the kiosks at Flamenco Beach. You can get chicken on a stick for $2. I ate so much of it that I finally got sick of it. But what a bargain!

Hi Mort!

Yep..basically. What we are used to spending in total for the 2 of us for airfare / accomodations / food is approx $2500 - $3000 for a 2 week vacation...I guess I just don't want to have this same thinking and then get somewhere new and be totally out of line and not have enough money with....it is sounding like we will be just fine and probably won't need 1/2 per day of what we are used to....we aren't really into going to the americanized restaurants..we love eating at the local food stands, etc....our favorite meals out on Isla were when the locals meet at the town square on sunday nights with all their home cooked favorite dishes to sell....another favorite has been the bimbo dogs from the street vendors...I guess what had me really wondering what we would be looking at needing to save for our trip is because I saw someone mention $30 for a case of beer...that made me think that I'd better find out what food costs are like...we have been in such a comfort zone of knowing just what to expect on vacation, it has been like going to our 2nd home and so going somewhere new is really exciting but at the same time unfamiliar territory...

I don't think you'll encounter too many surprises, financially. Except for the general rule that vacations always cost more than planned! Most of us have a hard time sticking precisely to our budgets when having fun.

But that problem is FAR FAR less in Culebra than say, NYC or a cruise ship.
