Holy Week
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello Again,

I was very excited to visit Culebra this upcoming March 13-20. I knew I would be there partly during Holy Week, but from some previous posts it sounded like it would still be an ok time to go.

Today I called to get some information from one of the businesses on the island and they informed me that in fact Holy Week is absolutely NOT a good time to be on the island.

They mentioned that the crowds are really bad , there is a high rise in crime for the week, and that there would be no available hotel rooms.

Although I have already purchased my airline tickets, I have not made any reservations yet for hotels. I figured I would just go with the flow and find places to stay when we got there, but I am now very concerned.

I was hoping to get some input from others on this matter first before I decided to try to change my airline tickets to another date.

Thanks, I really appreciate everyones help with this!

I've heard the same thing that you have. Going with the flow in Easter week is kind of like leisurely floating over Niagara Falls.

One friend of mine was at Flamenco Beach during Easter week last year and she said you could barely walk without stepping on a tent.

If you are camping, you can probably always find a place to squeeze in somewhere. A hotel room is another matter.

If you have the ability to change your dates, I'd definitely do it. Only then will you truly experience the things that make Culebra so special.

I don't think you could just wander onto the island during Holy Week and expect to find a place to stay. Other times of the year, yes, but not Holy Week. Crowded is relative to those of us that like having Culebra to ourselves. It is certainly not "New York City" even during Holy Week, but it is crowded compared to other times of the year. I have not been on Culebra during Holy Week, but I can tell you that having been there previously during President's Day Week and during July, that I won't go back during those times. If Holy Week is more crowded than those two times, then I don't wish to be there, but that's just my opinion. I prefer to be in places (even here in Atlanta) where there are not many people. I get frustrated just going to the mall, if you know what I mean.

Happy Diving!
Debbie
