We had breakfast twice at Culebra Deli. Great sandwiches on "pan criollo", puertorrican bread. Good coffee and expresso, juices, etc., inexpensive. You can buy it there and eat it later; pastries are good. The locals go there so check it out. Just a couple of blocks from the pier. Happy travels!

The Dinghy Dock and Mamacita's also serve breakfast.

Two other places that operate in a similar fashion as Culebra Deli (which I've never tried) are El Patio Panaderia across from Happy Landings next to the airport, and Pandeli Panaderia across from the Methodist church in town. Both do the pan criollo style sandwiches. On beach days, I order a huevo queso y jamon y el cubano (ham egg and cheese and Cuban) sandwiches. I'm good to go all day until dinner. Sandwiches are about $4 each, and there is something very special about that sandwich press that transforms good french style bread into gourmet magic.

Is happy landings still there. We use to eat there but the last time we were there a few years ago they had closed down.

Happy Landings the food establishment is gone.
Happy Landings the bar catering to locals is still there.

Somebody could correct me, but I think it wise to avoid the place.
And this is from somebody whose favorite watering hole is the Hotel Puerto Rico! I love that Felo!

don't be scared of Happy Landings, just be polite. and slug back whatever is available - it's pretty much the only after hours place to buy OTC liquor. but eating there???.

you'll still have fun.

I guess it depends on when breakfast occurs. and what breakfast means.

We went to El Patio Panaderia and he was out of breakfast by 10:15 AM when his sign says that they serve breakfast until 11 AM. Coffee is not freshly made every time. He makes it and puts it in one of those coffee serving tanks, Yuck! At Culebra Deli it's made fresh every serving, YUM! The guy attending El Patio wasn't very pleasant, either. Culebra Deli is very inexpensive and when you see locals going, it's got to be good. I found Dinghy Docks and Mamacitas to be a bit expensive when you can get the same quality food cheaper elsewhere, unless you want to eat with a view. Happy Travels! J.

Happy Landings actually used to be a really nice place to eat, but that's now about 15 years ago ..

Enjoy Culebra!

"We went to El Patio Panaderia and he was out of breakfast by 10:15 AM when his sign says that they serve breakfast until 11 AM."

This is a complaint? You are freaking kidding me, right? I've been on the island when there was no gasoline for two days, no milk for three days and no electricity for 36 hours. (Not all at once silly!) Oh, and people used to wait for the vegetable truck on Tuesdays for fresh produce.

Folks this is the acid test for you and your enjoyment of Culebra. If something like this is going to bother you, best go somewhere else.

OPEN SOME DAYS, CLOSED OTHERS.

this has been a public service announcement. <vbg>

You know, you could just go fishing for your breakfast at the nearest swamp puddle , too. I think for the sake of progress, as far as tourism goes, do as best as you can. If your best is mediocre then people are going to go to the next island like the Dominican Republic where things are cheaper by three times and service better than at our own island. We are all trying to make things better and maybe if the owners of some of these places that are mentioned in the FORUM were to actually read some of the constructive criticism that is posted, things would be so much better. It is not a complaint it is a wake up call. There are many locals (puertorricans) who don't stay to vacation any more within our island. PR has to compete not only with DR but, Disney and other places where you get more for your buck and stay open 24 hours a day. I WILL return to PR and Culebra to vacation and state my opinion. Maybe someday, Frank, you'll visit my restaurant and have some fresh coffee or something good to eat in a timely fashion! Love and peace! J.

All I can say is that Culebra and PR are two very different places, though there are some great spots out of the city that remind me of Culebra.
I've had bad coffee on the big island, rude service, etc. and I've had great coffee and wonderful service...but as we told the Tourism Board during a meeting here, we aren't targeting the same sort of tourism that SJ is.
Culebra can only support so many visitors at a time and sometimes that number gets overwhelming for our infastructure. We're not St. Barts, we're not even Jost Van Dyke. We are what we are, and some people love that, while some find it an experience they can do without.
So you found a place you like to have breakfast. Excellent! Don't go back to the places you don't like. Seems pretty simple to me.
A wake up call? We like being a bit drowsy ;)
What restaurant is yours? It might be a great spot for those who need to spend time on the big island before or after leaving here.

That's my point!

First, Culebra doesn't have to "compete" with DR, St Thomas, Cancun and Disney. Those places already exist and offer an experience that has nothing to do with Culebra. Since when did "progress in tourism" become the goal for Culebra?

Culebra is as Culebra does and that's okay.

My kids, for example, love Culebra despite it's "service warts". And you know what, I am pretty thrilled that they understand that not everyplace in the world needs to be open for 24 hours a day or strive to meet some sort of customer satisfaction standard. The PEOPLE on Culebra seem pretty happy for the most part and I'm not quite sure how folks imposing their standards on them are going to make them so much happier.

Maybe (I don't know for sure this is purely speculation) the guy at El Patio who is so "unpleasant" (I have never found him to be that way but that is a different topic) is hoping some of the tourists that have invaded and changed his home island would choose to spend their dollars elsewhere. Maybe he'd be glad to see the lady (not you) who was complaining to him the last time I was there about the lack of wine selection head off to some island that can meet her snotty needs.

Jeannie, or supergarcia3 ... this post isn't sent to you in anger or hate or any negative emotion at all. Love and peace indeed ... that is something we all aspire to and hope to bring to the world. But as I said, the goal is not for establishments in Culebra to provide some sort of service that meets yours standards.

The real wake up call is for people to stop trying to turn Culebra into the Dominican Republic or St Johns. Because once the charm of Culebra is gone, we can never get it back. And part of that charm (for me at least) is the reminder that sometimes in life we can't get what we want when we want it and we ought to remember that the world doesn't revolve around us. I mean that in a philosophical sense, not a literal "attack" on anybody and their world view on how things should work.

I am curious about one thing. You speak of Culebra as "our island" yet say you'll "return their for vacation" ... and also imply you own a restaurant. Do you live and own a business on Culebra or have just vacationed there? If not, where is your restaurant? I'd like to visit and say hello ... and take advantage of your good food and great service!

Frank, I agree with not trying to change Culebra into something else. That is the draw for us....the laid back feeling and warmth we get when we are there. The one thing with traveling is that we want to live much like the people who live on the island all the time. We like the "no frills" approach to vacationing. Someone once posted that Culebra isn't for the faint of heart but for someone who enjoys experiences.
We have never found the people on the island rude and who can stay up for 24 hours anyway. We love getting up early, taking a morning swim, hiking into beaches and on and on.
Anyway, I am rambling.... don't change anything on Culebra PLEASE

Tricia and Glen

This thread is the template for every Culebra-loving person to embrace. Before I first came to Culebra, I read 'Rum and Reggae', a travel guide to the Caribbean. In it the author commented on the fact that Culebrenses are very into keeping the island what it is. And that's a laid back, safe, gentle place where people and nature can acheive a harmonious mutuality that trumps hardbitten, driving commercialism. I'm sad to report that some precious ground has been lost in this area, but it is to the credit of Culebrenses, and empathetic ex-pats that gentrification/surrender to the buck continues to face courageous opposition. Anyone who finds Culebra wanting because of its differences from Disney has many options. Do yourselves and Culebra a favor: go with your instincts.

Okay, we've all heard this before but...please don't change Culebra. In 1976 I had the wonderful please of visiting St John. Just about the only place that existed was The Crab Shack. I fell in love. 8 years later I returned and was surprised at what I found...too much stuff. I continued to go for many years, but finally I just had enough of - too much stuff. About 13 or 14 years ago I visited Culebra and got that wonderful feeling I had when I first visited St. John. I have visited about 8 times since and will be there the end of this month. Why do I go? Because there isn't a lot of stuff. I don't need Burger King or a shopping mall or a fancy club to entertain me. I can sit on a porch and watch the bananaquits fight over sugar water or walk the beautiful white beach on Flaminco or snorkel in that beautiful Caribbean water with schools of blue tangs. If Myara's or the Superetta are out of what I'm looking for, well there's always tomorrow or I just take what is available. The island is charming in it's own right, and the Culebrences are some of the most pleasant and polite people I've ever encountered. Breakfast??? Spread your business around and get to know all the wonderful people who live there! And that's all I have to say about that as I count down the days!

hey June I had a superior at work and we did not get along on apersonal level until we discovered that she had bummed around the BVI about then and learned I like C. She'd echo your sentiments. Was surprised to hear C has central sewer now. We both saw each other in a much different way after that. Was very eager to see photos, but I'm not much of a snap-shotter.

My 2 cents worth.....perfect breakfast...get out of the tent at 9:00...fresh fruit from the Friday morning zoo at the corner of the airport road and the road to zoni or from milka and a granola bar mixed in. Maybe some carbs from Pandeli.
