Guarida del Zorro (Susie's)
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Just back from a week+ on Culebra & want to recommend G del Z (up the road along the north side of the airport). Best meals we had in 8 days on the island. Susie is a great cook and hostess-from-the-kitchen. Prices and decor are low-budget; it's self-service - shoot pool in the adjoining bar while you wait.

We paid more than twice as much at Juanita Banana's for just-average food ($12 for an iceberg lettuce salad, $28 for overcooked fish on oily onions, $15 for a few small vegetable portions on a big plate.

We ate most often at Mamacita's - convenient location - where the food was usually pretty good and the service excellent.

Suzie does local foods with a gourmet twist at a variety of prices. It just depends on what she gets in the market ;) Her island mash is incredible! I'd never had it before and it is great (root plants with potatoes and seasoned - if you are a mash potato person, this is enough to get you to ALWAYS want island mash instead).
Sorry I can't be more specific on prices...I've had meals from 12 to 17 dollars, and usually more than I can eat. She is definitely a favorite spot for locals and visitors, despite the small space. You can also order ahead and make it take out.

We just returned yesterday from a week on Culebra and can vouch for the freshness of the ingredients and the wonderful flavor combinations that Susie offers up. I had the pork with carmelized green apples and my husband had the Mahi-mahi with curry cream sauce. Both were great but his dish was fabulous!! (especially with the island mash)

I'll be posting a brief trip summary within a few days - we had a wonderful trip, but wanted to chime in on this thread and give La Guarida some kudos.

HI EVERYONE:

Last January 28 I finnaly opened my own place in town apropiately called SUSIE'S. It's located in the Culebra fishermen Association Building which is located in downtown Dewey. (Where you get gas.) For all my friends that visited me at the foxes Lair you will be happy to know that I now have a lot more space (10 tables) parking and a cofortable kitchen which allows me to be more creative and provide faster service than before.
As alway's my heart is in the food I serve and my mind in new recepies to try out!!!!
Buen Provecho!
Susie

So far, so fantastic! I'm getting super positive feedback from Susie's customers in *next day raves* at the cart. Well worth the long wait; congratulations, Susie!
