Ferry Warning (Limited passenger capacity)
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I thought it would be unlikely this time of year, but the 1:00 ferry (from Culebra to Fajardo) was completely full last Sunday (27Jan08). This caused me to miss my flight from San Juan back to Charlotte. The 5:00 ferry was supposedly also full that day... The reason for this: the normal passenger ferry is out of service--therefore they are using the smaller cargo ferry in it's place. So, this has apparently created a bottleneck at certain days and times.

Apparently, this particular ferry (on Sunday) was booked 2-weeks in advance. Perhaps, maybe I would have gotten a ticket if I arrived at the ticket counter at 12:00 noon (when they open).

I did manage to get on a little airplane (Vieques Air Link) at 4:00 PM. Unfortunately, it was 1-hour late, so I could not make my flight at SJU.

Could anyone add to what I've posted regarding problems using the ferry (e.g. days and times to avoid it (Sunday?). Any indication when the normal passenger ferry will be operating again?

All in all, my 10-days on Culebra were great. I just could have done without this unpleasant surprise at the end of my stay. Traveller beware.

Detlef

Sorry You missed your flight Detlef, Kate & I had high hopes for you making your flight. We got out on Monday, but we had to buy new tix, on a different airline. Live & learn, though I'm not sure what we could have done to avoid that from happening again.

Oh, well, I'll still be going back!

Michael

Probably one way to avoid a problem is to leave Culebra on Saturday rather than Sunday. (And to arrive on a Sunday rather than a Saturday.)

When we caught the 1:00 ferry on Sat Jan 19, it was the cargo ferry as well, but there were plenty of empty seats. It was probably a quarter or third full at the most.

We're traveling to Culebra on 2/13 and returning to Fajardo early morning on the ferry 2/20....both Wednesdays. Is there any reason we should be concerned about seats not being available on those dates? We were told previously that this wasn't a high volume time and we didn't need reservations.

thanks!

Good afternoon,
Although the passenger ferry has not been working, there has been a cargo ferry running on the passenger ferry schedule (& another one running on the cargo schedule).

It is high season, & we always advise guests to purchase round trip tickets on the Fajardo side if at all possible. Also, it is recommended that you be there at least an hour before the ferry goes in order to line up to buy tickets.

Another suggestion we make to guest who arrives without return tickets is to stop by on a different day & buy thier tickets before their actual day of travel-thus eliminating needing to be there so early & also the possiblity of not getting tickets.

Sundays have been particularly crowded because in addition to folks leaving to catch connecting SJU flights, many day & weekend trippers are heading back.

Have a good day!
Terrie

Weekends are by far the biggest travel days, which corresponds to how busy Flamenco beach is as well.

Midweek is the quietest time (by far), especially Tu/We/Th. Friday starts picking up as weekenders start to arrive. Sunday is the day that most people leave. Monday drops way down (except when Mon is a holiday).

A great deal of Culebra visitors are locals from the big island, especially at Flamenco. And on holiday weekends, the percentage is even more vastly weighted toward locals, hence the ferries are jammed.

Needless to say, avoid holiday weekends if you can. Or if you are in Culebra over a holiday weekend, avoid using those days for travel.

That's been my experience!

(Janet, given that you are going to be in Culebra on holiday weekend, you picked the best possible time to come and go... on Wednesdays. I don't think you'll have a problem. Buy your return ticket at the same time as your outgoing ticket, and arrive an hour ahead and stake out a spot near the entry door. I've never personally been bumped from the ferry, but I assume that they start barring people when they can't fit any more on... Which means that the first ones on get to stay on. I have heard that people with tickets sometimes don't get on, though it's very rare.)

Round-Trip ferry tickets will NOT always work. Last Sunday, I met a couple who had pre-purchased round-trip at Fajardo. Like me, They could not get on the ferry to return to Fajardo. This was likely because they did not show up 1-hour ahead of departure (15-minutes).

Thanks everyone for responding to this post. Does anyone have any idea when the passenger ferry will be up-and-running again???? I sure hope we can help prevent someone from going through travel strife.

BTW, After my 1-hour late Vieques Air Link flight, I did get to the USAirways desk at San Juan International (too late to board). They rescheduled my flight for the next day for no extra charge. Earlier that day, I tried contacting USAirways through their1800 number, they wanted to charge me an extra $350 for changing the flight! So it was definately worth my while to gamble on going to the airport in person. There may be airline regulations that protect the traveller when you actually show up in person within 24-hours of missing your flight. in my case, I came 15-minutes before the plane flew away (flight was already closed).

Lessons Learned:
1) Avoid taking the ferry from Culebra to Fajardo on weekends (especially Sundays)
2) Secure a round trip ferry ticket in Fajardo, if possible.
3) Show up to the Culebra ferry terminal 1-hour before departure to secure your reservation (even if you have a round-trip ticket.
4) Ask folks in town about any complications regarding using the ferry ahead of time.
5) If you can't get on the ferry, you may be able to book with Vieques Air Link or Air Flamenco or maybe Isla Nena--and still make your flight at SJU.
6) If all fails, try recheduling your flight via telephone. If they want more than $100 to change your ticket, you may want to gamble on getting to the SJU airport within 24-hours of missing your flight for a better deal.

Hope all this helps someone out there,

Detlef

I'd add...a number of people get back to SJ a day before their flight (using the ferry or flying) just to have more chances of making their flight out of SJU on time, depending on the time of year or current weather. I've flown over a day early if the weather looks to be rotten the day of my flight out of SJU.
Yes, it means a hotel night and I'd rather spend the money on fun...but I'd rather NOT miss my flight. Another aspect of life in Paradox...(well done, Detlef - tough lessons but our reality and to many, as you expressed, well worth the occasional slow chaos).

Detlef, after seeing you at Flamenco campground (you took over one of our spaces when we left), and knowing how calm and relaxing things were, it's hard to imagine how hectic your return must have been. It's incongruous.

But that's what you get for going back to the real world!

The passenger ferry is up and running...we had to take the freight ferry to the island and rode the passenger ferry back to the main island last Wednesday.

The passenger ferry runs TO Culebra at 9am, 3pm, & 7pm. It goes FROM Culebra at 6:30am, 1pm, & 5pm.

A couple of days ago they were running the big Culebra II passenger ferry. Today they are running the cargo boat on the passenger schedule.

no worries MJ. in Papua New Guinea things changed by the second & each & every time you asked the same question the answer would/could be different-a totally cultural aspect there that could be...um maddening/laughable depending on your mood-eh!
