Loved it!
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We just got back from a one week stay in Culebra and loved every relaxing, sun soaked, hammock swinging, pina colada drinking, empenada eating minute of it! We were looking for a low key relaxed vacation and this was definitely it. We stayed on Flamenco Beach at the Culebra Beach Villas and loved being steps away from one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The accommodations were rustic but sheets/towels and bathroom were clean..what else do you need? They even had roosters to wake you up at 4am (which my 2yo son thought was the most amusing thing in the world). We spent most of our time on the beach, the sand was the softest I've ever felt. It was a special thing to feel like we had this gorgeous tropical beach all to ourselves.
One of the nicest things about Culebra are the people, everyone we met from the locals, to the expatriates hanging at the bar and fellow tourists were incredibly friendly and eager to share their favorite Culebra spots and experiences. Everyone was warm and welcoming to us and our 2 year old.
This was the most relaxing vacation we've ever had and can't wait to come back.

I feel like I did "get it" maybe a little too much, it was difficult to return to below freezing weather and resume my normal life :( I would love to be a "regular" not sure if I have the funds for it, but we will definitely be back again. And I'll try not to spread the word too much about Culebra...as it's lack of mass tourism is one of the things that makes it so special. We did see some development going on on the island...I hope there are restrictions in place to limit the amount/size of buildings that go up, it would really be a shame to see Culebra go the way of so many other Caribbean islands with giant resorts taking over.

rest assured there are extensive and strict development rules. which is a double edged sword as limited supply means higher cost...

and yes, I've found my work attitude suffers after returning. "why am I here when I could be THERE?"

Is it my imagination or is Culebra getting more populated??? Seems like there are a ton of cars and trucks over there now too!

Next time I go back I'm renting a room away from everything! I just wanted a good night's sleep, and those roosters drove me nuts this time! I didn't mind the horses walking down our sidewalk at all. I didn't mind the iguana's either. Oh, and the cats! I think there are more cats on that island than people! :)

It just seems like more people are finding out about Culebra.

The people there are great, but there are just too many animals over there.
