Shipping charges to Culebra?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Anyone have any idea on what it would cost to ship a box of things we will use in Culebra (i.e. stuff I have at home and don't want to buy there)? I know no one will know the exact cost, but has anyone shipped anything over there? All I've ever sent is a Christmas card! The box may end up being 20 lbs. or so, so I'm wondering if anyone else has done this. If it's going to be too much, I'll check it in as luggage!

I haven't done this, but you can go to ups.com and get an estimate of time and cost.

I remember about 6 weeks ago R. Emmett and Debbie posted this exchange:

doesn't help with charges, but if you opt for US Mail...

honestly - first time I brought waaay too much, expecting the worst regarding availability - I know you mentioned not wanting to buy there but unless you're talking dive gear, given TSA weirdness and inconsistency, is it worth it? I really only used half of what I did bring (and now for a week stay I'm down to a small jump bag and it's still at half, 'cept undies). whatever clothes you pack, stop and put half (or even more) back in the closet.

There are USPS and UPS sites online that will tell you almost exactly what shipping would cost to this zip code (00775) by weight. Of course, this information requires that if you bring anything really exotic and interesting, you have to share it with all of us!

From my zip in ME to Culebra zip according to USPS, I found a variety of charges for a #25 package - from $34 to $70 depending on the size & shape of the package & whether you want priority, insurance, etc. Jet blue allows my cardboard box to go as luggage so I may not ship/mail after all.

We've carried on boxes on Delta as well. You need to remember that if you're flying from SJU to Culebra, you'll likely pay overweight fees for the luggage plus the box. We've also been hit with charges when taking a lot of stuff on the ferry (from a PR shopping excursion). I think the ferry rule is one bag per person, loosely enforced.

Happy Diving!

I know all about packing way too much, I've been to Culebra three times and have taken everything but the computer and kitchen sink. I think I can pack light this time, and if I forget to bring it, I'll buy it!

When we came over on the ferry we noticed that many of the people had little luggage carts with wheels onto which they strapped several boxes. I figured out that this was they only had to pay for one extra package (as opposed to the six they had strapped on the wheels.

Abe, I'm not sure I understand. Does the ferry charge for extra luggage? Is there a limit? If so, how many per person?

I could be wrong but my interpretation of the sign at the Fajardo ticket office was that on the passenger ferry there was a charge for each piece of luggage. I know that we had to pay for each of our bicycles. Perhaps someone who travels the ferry regularly could enlighten me.
