Cheap places, sharks, and scooters
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi there!
I'm coming to Culebra Jan. 17th-22nd and have a few questions.

I'm traveling alone and have a student's budget- where is a good place to stay for an independent, poor person who is fine with shared bathrooms?
Does anyone know anything about Villa Nueva or Villa Naniqui? Ideally, I would love to find a place for about $60/night. Someplace cheap where I could maybe meet other people?

Also, I'm terrified of sharks and manta rays. Has anyone seen these while snorkeling or swimming on Culebra?

And finally, I'm thinking of renting a scooter while there but I'm not sure its worth it. I'd like the independence and mobility it would allow, but it might also be a pain? Anyone have thoughts on this? I know there are taxis that can go places, but do you have to wait forever for them?

Thanks everyone!
Clarita

Villa Nueva is now Palmetto Culebra (owner Terri posts here frequently, so ask lots of questions). http://www.palmettoculebra.com/

Both Palmetto and Naniqui are within walking distance of the airport, bars, restaurants, ferry dock and shops. It's a fair walk to Flamenco Beach, but do-able. Taxis will take you to the beach and back for $2 each way. There are plenty of kioskos at the beach for inexpensive food.

I can't even touch your question about sharks and manta rays - I LIVE to see them!

Happy Diving!
Debbie

sharks and mantas won't bother you - if you think you see a small shark, it's prob. just a Tarpon and rays are super shy (this is from an extreme worrier)

I can't speak to your lodging but for food you can always p/u basics in town. store hours are limited and cabs really don't work like they do elsewhere and really only go to Flamenco w/o prior arrangement.

that said, you'll still have a blast.

take sunblock or keep your eye open for the wild aloe growing.

Kokomo on the ferry dock - cheapest room shares a bathroom, you get what you pay for, that's all I can say about that. Cheapest is to camp on the beach and that's not at all a bad thing.
Sharks and rays - very cool, but you most likely won't see a shark (water is cool now, sharks here are rare). and if you did, it would be glad to go away from you. And to see a ray, you'd have to be looking and it doesn't sound like you'll be out there looking. Too bad you feel that way; they are one of the most awesome wonders of life under the surface of the sea.

Good morning Clarie, et al!

I have actually written to Lonely Planet several times not only re: our update (Villa Nueva changed to Palmetto-even before we purchased it) but because prices are quite outdated & ferry information is not accurate either (ie. no ferry from Culebra to Fajardo nor to St. Thomas).

In any event, please have a look at our website at http://www.palmettoculebra for up to date info., prices, photos, etc. We remodeled & opened Sept. first.

Too, we are about a mile & 1/2 to Flamenco-walk the dogs there most every morning!

We have had guests rent scooters & be happy with that & also others who've taxied around & that has worked out as too.

Please send me an email (palmettoculebra@yahoo.com) if I can be of more help!

Have a great day, all.
Terrie

Uh oh- what's this about no ferry from culebra to fajardo? I have the Lonely Planet and have been basing my plans on it.
Can anyone tell me the accurate ferry schedule?
I'll be coming from San Juan on Thursday Jan. 17th and leaving Tuesday January 22nd.

Where did you get that about the ferry Claire? It runs 3 x a day from Fajardo to Culebra and back...at least that is my understanding.

phew!
Actually, speaking of the ferry, my flight gets in to SJ at noon. Will I be able to make the ferry from Fajardo in time? I'm a little worried about it. Lonely Planet says that last one leaves Fajardo to Culebra at 3pm!

You should be able to make the 3pm ferry if you hustle. It's not the last one - there's one at 7pm as well.

Happy Diving!
