four days on Culebra
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello!
I will be going to Culebra at the end of November and have some questions.

1) Any recommendations for a cheap (around $80/night or less) cute place to stay?
2) How will the weather be in late November?
3) Has anyone taken a publico from San Juan to Fajardo?
4) What are some favorite things to do/places to see that we should definitely plan on doing in the short time we have there?
5) Any favorite restaurants? Is there a nightlife in Culebra to speak of?

Thanks!

Hi Claire

No publico can pick up in San Juan. Required by the Commision Public Services. I had experienced the publico's in San Juan and they made me take a taxi to Fajardo. There are taxi's that you could take.

1.Villa Fulladoza (787) 742-3576
4.Water taxi to Culebrita
5.Mamcitas and it's as close to nightlife as you can get.

Hi Claire,
I think we've emailed.

Mamacita's restaurant just opened tonight & they sometimes have live music which is fun!

November is cooler than September, but still warm. Nice, in that the water temps are still up there.

Re: things to do... take a bike, scooter, or car around & explore. Go on a day trip on the water & snorkel. Get dropped off at Culebrita or take a glass bottom boat boat ride. Make a picnic & head to one of the beautiful beaches for r & r (we have small soft sided coolers & large ones for guests who want to lug it all). Hike down to Brava or Rasaca & have a beach all (or mostly) to yourself!

Re publico from San Juan: you need to take a bus to Rio Piedras, from where the publicos leave!

Enjoy Culebra!

I highly recommend a snorkeling/scuba trip to Culebrita with Taz (boat name: Raz-ma-Taz, off the pier near Mamacita's). As a midwesterner, I've never seen anything like what I saw that day; Hawksbill turtle, spotted eagle ray, juvenile nurse shark, and crystal clear water. Taz is a great guy with cheaper rates than anyone else around. Forget about the glass-bottomed boat and just get into the water!

I stayed at Mamacita's and loved it: very clean, comfy bed, satellite TV (hey, there's always a little down time), microwave and refridgerator, and the noise is not as bad as Lonely Planet made it seem (everything was silent by 10 PM, but I was there during the week). See if you can talk them down on their rates: a friend of mine got them down to $60. And the food is just incredible.

You've just GOT to snorkel, and getting around the island is not easy if you don't get a jeep. So try to get a jeep from Jerry's (cheaper than Carlos at the airport) and you'll see more beaches. There are virtually no taxis on the island.

One last thing: I recommend that you bring your own snorkeling gear, even though it takes up space in your luggage. Get something that fits you well, set the mask to your size, and forget about it. I had a friend that rented snorkeling gear: the mask was too tight (and she spent maybe 20 minutes adjusting it and it still wasn't comfortable) and the fins were too loose. And this was not cheap! The money she spent on renting would have easily bought her a set in the States.

I'll mention too that the glass bottom boat is a lot of fun. Pat is a great captain & guide. For the non-snorkel types - though she offers that as well - it is a chance to see what is down there without getting wet (but you should absolutely get in the water if you can on one of the beaches she'll take you to).
During season when things get busy around here, we're lucky to have a few different people available for a variety of boating, scuba and snorkling activities; don't be afraid to ask. While prices vary, competence, safety and enjoyment are the hallmarks of who I know and recommend offering those services, Taz, Pat of Tanama & Walter & Monica of Culebra Divers...(there is fishing, yoga, and kayaking too...what does yoga have to do with boating? You'll have to call Anthony the yoga guy to find out!)
It isn't hard to get a better deal on rooms during slow season, but I wouldn't count on it as we get closer to Thanksgiving and the true start of the busy season.
