Can you assure us that Mr. Gonzales carries legal registration and insurance to transport people?

I was cautioned last year by longtime campground staff that there is a procedure for transport safety and legality. I was encouraged to use those transporters who operate within the law.

I have not personally inspected his publico license. I assume that he has one. For me the reliability and recommendations from other people and the fact that you can reach him via email are the more important factors.

Enjoy Culebra!

Why would a long-time Flemenco campground employee caution me about the importance of having the legal transport license?

For me, from the perspective of riding in a safe vehicle and with a driver who is licensed/insured to transport clients, what's important is not making assumptions. I know what that can do and I did it, last Feb. when I e-mailed Zorida through this forum's recommodation. At that time, my friends and I had a small window of time to get to the ferry.

Zoriada's service failed us, even after she personally, repeatedly reassured me through e-mail a day ahead of flying into the international airport that 'all would be well', that we would be met with a large sign with my name on it. It didn't happen that way so we took a regular licensed van. No problemo.

Another Maine friend made numerous, repeated cell phone contact to Zoriada while on the main island both prior to services from there to Fajardo and setting them up from Culebra to depart. My friend later told me that Zorida's taxi cannot be in certain airport parking areas without proper licensing. It's illegal.

How was I to know that the taxi would not be plainly visible, but would be lurking across the street, several blocks away near a certain restaurant. Zorida had not informed me of this small detail. Perhaps she is licensed now, that I don't know.

I was initially attracted to Zoraida's service because of the fact that she offered what I would have, were I hiring out - a scenic alternative to the industrial hiway most vans take, along with some local history narration to spice up the drive. I have suggested her to several people on this board and several on www.traveltalkonline.com . Owly, yours is the first negative review I've seen, and I'm sorry if I led you astray.

Now, as to the particulars, I'm guessing that, were Zoraida to pay all her licensing fees, she might not be able to run her business they way she does. In my home town, airport taxis are all licensed, and individual operators are not included. So we get surly cabbies who grouse if you aren't going very far, and drive like maniacs to dump you and get back for another fare. I'd say her sin was not telling Owly exactly how and where to meet her, and the next chance I get, I will mention it to her.

Thank you John for your reply here; it says a lot to me that you send this information because I currently hold a state license and know how I feel about having done the work to get it in a legitimate way.

Thanks also to Doug for his reply and for being willing to get more information about Zoraida's service to those of us using the Forum.

Emmett,

From my understanding the pubico's has their own route destination and any insurance company does not insure the publico's. For example: I came back to PR and one of the publico's from Fajardo came to pick me up at the San Juan airport and the inspector from the Tourism company said to me that I had to take a taxi because they are not allow to pick up anyone at the San Juan airport. Cause they have a their own route. But, so that you could feel safe, here is the Tourism number that they gave me when I got here in San Juan: 787-999-2106. People should call the Commision Public Services to ask some questions about that.

Ita,

You are absolutely right publicos have they own route just like the taxis in San Juan, but its call (FLETE) a verbal agreement with any clients and me, I could go any were in the Island to pick the client up or drop them off. About the insurance I have 2 insurance one that covers the piblico thats call compulsorio, the other that covers any passenger I have in my pulico its call AKA.The only place I cant go is to the rain forest, not even the taxis could go to the rain forest. The taxis in San Juan Have there own route its only San Juan when you get a taxi and hire them to bring you to Fajardo thats a (FLETE) They are abandoning there route.

Thank You,
John

John:

I have been investagating and I have been told that the taxi's in San Juan if you look at the taxi door that it reads Taxi San Juan Tourist, which means that they could take anyone, anywhere the tourist asking to take them and some of the taxi's do have permits to go to the Rain Forest. As for the insurance on Compulsorio covers for car damages that covers up to $3,000.00 and la AKA only covers hospitalization ONLY. I have a family who works on that kind of stuff. But, I will call the commission public office and ask about the route and flete. The San Juan taxi have an insurance policy that covers hospitalization and in case of death. Their policy is different then yours. Also my father is a publico driver also.
