General Advice on 1st trip to Culebra, please!
Culebra, Puerto Rico

My husband & I, newly retired love to snorkel & have been trying to get to Culebra for a few years. We finally have air reservations in September. The travel from SJ to Culebra is a little confusing. Are there regular, non-charter flights to save $$ ?? Can we get a flight out of the international airport, or only out of Isla Verde? We'd like to fly to Culebra & take the ferry back, just for the adventure of it. We will spend the last night near SJ airport to insure getting on the plane home. Although, from all of you experienced Culebra residents & travellers on this forum, we may want to miss the transportation deliberately to stay longer!! :) Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Hi Gloria,

On this website, check the Transportation page, and in the second paragraph, you can click for air travel info.

Also, this site has good info: http://www.tamarindoestates.com/culebra_air_ferry.html

"scheduled" non-charter one-ways are available from both SJ airports and Fajardo.

there are recent threads that discuss the variables involved.

and no matter how long you stay it won't feel long enough the minute you leave.

It would be a lot cheaper to fly out of Isla Verde...if you compare the prices you will see what I mean. Even though you have to pay for Taxi from one to the other you still come out ahead if you go from Isla.

In the end, your primary determinant will be flight times and connection intervals. If your flight from the states arrives in the morning or early afternoon, you will have the luxury of shopping price. If late afternoon, you'll have little choice.

When returning by ferry, consider using Zoraida Banks for your ride. If time permits, her historic coastal route adds a lot to your visit. She's listed in the transportation section.

Doug

Thanks for the information, Richard. We made our reservations to leave SJ for Culebra, via the Isla Grande airport.

Thanks for the information, Ty. We are flying out of Isla Grande, with Flamenco airlines. Only a little more than a month now!!

I think Doug has better advice, but don't worry. it's fun to play by ear.

hi gloria,
thus far we've found flamenco air to be pretty good/helpful. make sure you have left enough time to pick up bags at the int'l airport & taxi (about 20 min.) to isla grande. from there the islander aircraft takes about 30 min. & is a nice scenic ride.

on the outgoing end the ferry times are: 6:30am, 1pm, & 5pm (culebra to fajardo) m-s. the ride is 1 1/2 hrs. the cargo ferry is also an optioin m-f at 7am & 6pm & takes 2 hrs.

taxis can be pricy in fajardo, but there is a taxi driver named "al" who is quite reasonable & the other suggestion to make a reservation with zorida banks for the "tour" back is a good one.

happy planning!

Good Advice, Doug. We finally got in touch with Flamenco air & got reservations. So far, it looks like we might fly round tripafter all. We will keep your drive tour in mind. It sounds like fun and informative.
