Fly from Culebra to San Juan
Culebra, Puerto Rico

If we take the 1:30 flight out of culebra would that give us enough time to make a 3:30 flight out of San Juan's main airport.
Thanks

That's very risky. Even if you are flying into SJU, you have an agricultural inspection to complete in addition to the normal TSA crazyness. If it is a busy cruise ship day. I have my doubts. If you plan to fly into Isla Grande and cab to SJU add 20-40 minutes to that.

Be careful. The last time we flew, the pilot decided to stop by in Farjado to drop off couple of people, so it took us twice longer to get to San Juan.

I've never had to do the USDA, but then I'm never carrying food.

if you e-ticket and everything is carry-on, you might squeak through.

whatever you do avoid the check-in counter line - I've never seen them so bad. it's like Xmas at O'Hare but year-round.

It's rotten to have to get there way early and with the flight schedules out of here, that's your choice, but I'd never take that flight for a 3:30 connection in SJ - too chancy, and the guys here at the airport don't recommend it either, though I certainly have tried to figure out a way to do it! Crying doesn't work, don't try it.
If you go on the early flight, you can check out Old San Juan for awhile - or spend a really boring number of hours in the airport. But I'd go for lunch or something instead of the airport hours. SJ airport has to be the least interesting and least customer oriented international airport I've ever been in, But it gets me where I want to go!

Contrary to common opinion, I have made similar connections several times, but I did almost miss one, once! Crying does not help as MJ correctly states, speaking Spanish and being squeezed through security by an airport employee does. If you like that kind of excitement - try it :)

Enjoy Culebra!

We had the same problem with our return flight in the afternoon out of San Juan. To avoid missing it, we took the early morning flight from Culebra to Isla Grande and spent a few hours wandering around Old San Juan. It was delightful! Go to La Bombanera for breakfast and have a mallorca. Mmmmm!

Forgot to mention -- We left our luggage at Isla Grande while we were in OSJ for a few hours. The VAL rep locked it in the office. We picked it up on our way to International Airport.

Thanks everyone...that is actually what I thought you might say but was hoping that it wasn't so.

don't despair, I did exactly what you did once, w/o a watch and SJU had no clocks then and everything turned out fine.

and now they have clocks, and sign boards!

remember, if you don't have to deal with baggage or go out for a smoke, it all connects on the inside, and if you're e-ticket, you can completely (mostly) avoid the main terminal.

somebody correct me if it's changed.

and I second the idea of a meal at Bombanera

SJU was always sort of a toboggan ride...watch out for the clueless high school kids!!! if you see a bus unloading rush, rush ahead of them.

they'll screw you every time.

Another alternative for hanging out is only 5 minutes from SJU, taking traffic delays out of the equation. It is an outdoor bar/restaurant on Calle Amapola in Isla Verde called La Playita. The patio overlooks Isla Verde bay, with a great view of Pinones Point. It's a great place to take in a last view of emerald and turquoise water. If you watch closely you may see a manatee surface. The barmaid, Juanda, has been a great aquaintance since I met her in 1995. They serve a great Cheeseburger in Paradise and make pina coladas with fresh pineapple and coconut. When it's time to go, a cab is there in 5 minutes and it's 5 minutes to SJU.

Doug, do you prefer your Piña Colada that way? I tried it once and since I was so used to Lotus and Coco Loco did not really like the fresh stuff .. or at least not as a Piña Colada.

Basically, if you have an afternoon flight, it ruins your day either which way. So I would mix Doug's suggestion of hanging out overlooking some body of water, close to the airport, with taking the morning ferry and a taxi or car via Piñones or, thanks for the tip, La Playita.

I think most people, once at the airport won't take a taxi to go hang out for a couple of hours somewhere else. Old San juan is definitely too far IMO.

Enjoy Culebra!

I probably should mention that La Playita is in the La Playa hotel. I don't recommend the hotel, because it's kind of divey, but love the outdoor bar and grill. As for the fresh fruit version, I haven't had one for probably five years, but I liked it. It was fun to watch the guy knock the end off the coconut with the machete, too. These days, I usually stick to Presidentes or the occasional Barrillito y agua de coco.

Blender drinks:

when I tended bar, we'd go part fresh, part mix. all fruit and it's a little gloppy and very time intensive, but some fruit gives it a nice texture and rounds out the flavor.

In the old days Lotus was 100% juice, no concentrate, coloring, etc. and I used to love it - these days ... when I mentioned it to the owners of the company (who are in Culebra from time to time ..) they said the changes were necessary because the young people are so accustomed to sugar and sweeteners that they had to make it sweeter .. sad but true.

Enjoy Culebra!
