Ponce to Culebra?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi there,

I visited last August and traveled in from San Juan. I'm looking to come back for a long Memorial Day weekend and flights to Ponce are much cheaper than flying into San Juan.

It would be great if I could get some guidance on getting to Culebra from Ponce.

Thanks!!

Anne, I assume you are flying to Mercedita (TJPS) with American Eagle - is that correct?

If so, I think they fly to Vieques, from where you could hop over to Culebra with Flamenco.

I am just guessing here, anyone any first hand experience?

Enjoy Culebra!

I am flying into Mercedita on Continental (they are running really good deals from Newark NJ). But, you're saying American Eagle flies directly to Vieques from there? All that I've found so far suggests a rental car to fajardo and then the flight. What you've suugested sounds much easier.

Thanks so much for your help!!
Anne

Not bad! Did you ever use Jet Blue from JFK to SJU? I rather prefer JFK to Newark, but that of course depends on time of day ..

Enjoy Culebra!

I paid, for the secound week of may, 240USD r/t from Burlington, VT to SJU, with one stop at NewYark.

If the weather is good, I will take a flight from Grand Isle Airport (San Juan) to Culebra.

A good web site to check the fares is: http://www.sidestep.com/ This site search on all airlines compagnies + travel web agencies. But Flaminco Airlines are not there. ;-)

bye

Flights from Vieques to Culebra are spotty, these days. In March, because of lack of traffic, we had to fly to Fajardo and then to Culebra to accomplish it. If the timing works, it might pay to just get to Fajardo and fly from there. It's been a long time since I was in Ponce; anyone know the drive time to Fajardo?

Once in Fajardo I would rather take the ferry. The new fast ones really do not make much of a difference in terms of time anymore and they depart on time more reliably than the planes.

Ponce to Fajardo takes around 1.5 to 2hrs, depending on traffic. See also thread on isla-vieques.com:

Enjoy Culebra!

Got a flight from Jet Blue, JFK to Ponce for $215, tax included for this Wednesday night. I too was trying to figure out the best way to get to Culebra. It seems like the planes don't fly so often, but maybe there will appear to be more options at the airport? is it the kind of flight you can book day-of for not too much?
Otherwise, I'm guessing the way to go is via taxi/rental car to Fajardo?
Thanks.
