where to stay with a family
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I am researching the possibility of going to Culebra for Christmas with our family of 12. There will be 5 married couples, 1 eighteen year old, 1 two year old and 1 newborn. We need something with 5 or 6 bedrooms. Our married kids do not want to share a bedroom with other married siblings. I have looked at the villas but I am still confused. We really want a place on a wonderful beach. Please share any recommendations you have. Also, if you would be hestitate to travel here with a newborn (1month old) let me know. Some of us are divers others just want to lay on a white sand beach and soak up the sun. Thanks in advance for you help!

Cleone, the beauty of the beaches is that they are empty from buildings in Culebra. Flamenco is the most beautiful one, and only camping is allowed.
But the island is so small, no matter where you stay, you will be minutes from the beach.

There is the Culebra Beach Villas on Flamenco Beach. My wife and I stayed there a few weeks ago, and I wish I was there right now (I'm back in Iowa studying). It's RIGHT on the beach.

You won't be able to fit everyone into one villa, but you could possibly rent several. The one we were in had a bedroom with a queen bed, and the living room had two single beds. You could possibly sleep two couples in one villa. Anyway, I would check it out. We had a great time. You may need to rent a jeep (or two) to get around if you will be there for longer than a day or two. We were there for three night, and got by simply using the publicos (to save cash), but we didn't get a chance to really explore all of the island.

You might look into renting a large house from Culebra Island Realty http://www.culebraislandrealty.com/Rental_Listing/rental_property_information.htm Some of the larger houses on the east end of the island can accommodate large families, and they are close to Zoni Beach. They can be inconvenient for coming into town to eat every meal, and may be more conducive to cooking in.

Happy Diving!

Or, get in touch with Vacation Planners. Either of them have listings that will accommodate large family groups (even a newborn!). For that size of a group, it will be, naturally, a bit pricier, but shared it will even out. As Debbie says, those places will be homes, so you will have all the means for cooking in and still enjoying awesome views. Sounds like a fantastic holiday for your families!!! Hope it works out! (when I first moved here, I used to clean holiday homes, a truly fun job if you can imagine it- on your own, best pay on the island unless you are a bartender...and god knows I'm not (shockorama but true) and get to see the cool homes of the island, homes I'd never see otherwise; while the laundry dried I'd sit on the decks with my binoculars, enjoying such beautiful views...ok, I'd rearrange the furniture too, and have some brie and grapes and wine someone left for me, breakfast, cool! thanks! - it was always so wonderful to see families from so many places gather for the holidays, and I hope you all are one of them)

We have always rented from Jim, so I didn't even think about Vacation Planners!

I find their website a little hard to navigate - here's the link to the search for Culebra: http://www.islaculebra.com/puerto-rico/vacationplanners.htm

We just got back from Culebra and we stayed ast the Culebra Beach Villas
http://www.culebrabeachrental.com/ Loved it. we stayed in a unit with One bedroom with a queen sized be, a kitchenette, bathroom and two twins in room with the kitchen. However I saw the two larger units that are just across from eachother that had three bedrooms each. they each hold up to eight people. they were Beautiful #17 & #18 both had wrap around porches that would be ideal for a large family. Or you could rent one big one and a single. Check out the site. This was right on the most beatiful beach and snorkeling is in close walking distance from the villas. There was a large family next to us that actually stayed in three different units, but spent most of the time on one porch of the more central unit. Give them a call I'm sure you won't be disapointed. Beach is two minutes up the walkway.

Dito on the Villas. We just got back form there and our Villa was fantastic. You really spend most of your time at the beach and on the huge porch the Villas all have, but the inside had everything you need to cook and had enough privacy for two couples to stay out of eachothers way.

I'd recomend the Villas to anyone. Everyone staying there was super friendly and seemed to have large groups too. It'd be ideal and you can snorkel at Falmenco (to the right of the beach as you look to the sea) or walk to Carlos Rasario which was secluded and fantastic had snorkeling right off the beach - super cool!

We just got back and we stayed at casa aquabella. There were 3 couples, a single and two young kids. There are several places near there but casa aquabella would be a perfect gathering spot. There is a pool that is perfect for young children and adults alike. Our kids are 3 and 1 and loved it.

Walk to zoni is less than 5 minutes and we drove all over the island to visit the beaches.

Casa Zoni is close (less than a minute walk) so yo might consider renting both to have enough room to sleep as Casa Aquabella won't hold all of you...but trust me you will all gather there each day for the views from the deck and the chance to eat together!!!
