San Juan Car Rentals allowed in Culebra?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Are there car rental companies in San Juan that will allow you to take your car to Culebra? I've read on certain websites that its possible to do so but haven't been able to confirm. And if this is allowed, is the cargo ferry reliable enough to go with such a plan?

Appreciate all responses.

Actually its 7 mi. long and 5 mi. wide, so based on your math skills you're probably not the best person to seek advice from.

For those of you who actually know the island I would appreciate your input. Just want to know if I can rent a car in San Juan and take it to Culebra.

One, the rental companies in PR may invalidate your insurance if you take the car off island. Two, the cargo ferry is mostly that - for cargo. If a cargo truck misses the ferry, it gets priority on the next ferry which means cars get bumped. That's if you can even get a reservation on the day you wish (the locals take up the other spots with their errand runs). In my opinion, it's not worth the risk of missing the special time in Culebra.

Do you need a car on Culebra? In my opinion, yes, if you want to explore the island to its fullest. You can stay in town and be perfectly happy. You can walk to most restaurants and Melones Beach (but it is a longish walk), and the publicos will take you to Flamenco Beach during the day, but if you want to go to Zoni or Punta Soldado or out to eat at Bahia Marina or Club Seabourne, a car is the best option.

Happy Diving!

JH was off on her numbers, but someone sounds just a little snarky...

and actually the exact dimensions aren't the thing, it's the topography. so f'rinstance as the crow flies, Zoni isn't far at all from town, but to get there takes a lot more time and mileage.

listen to Debbie.

drbuten, i know how wide and long it is, i was just joking. We've been in Culebra a few times, and the first time we rented a car, which we never got to use, because we could walk everywhere, so there is no need to be rude, if you cant understand when people joke

Well, as someone who lives on Culebra without a car...they are sure handy when you want to go to the beaches on your own time vs. publico time and if I were here on holiday...here's some stuff I'd like to know.
The thing about getting a car from the big island to here is...the cargo ferry deal. You may pay whatever for insurance etc. but if you are not a local and it is a busy time you will be stuck over *there* and too bad, because we have priority and rightly so (if that sounds too aggressive, it is about people who live here taking a day off work to go to the big island for serious needs and have to get back that night because this is our real life and there is stuff we can't get here and so go get it and have to get home - like everyone wants to in any real life...our *freeway traffic jam time* involves a ferry).
So...advice, fly over or take the ferry and rent a vehicle here.
I tell people who will have a week or so here, take one day to check out town, talk to people, rest, relax, get in the groove (or two days, even better) and then when you know where you would like to go that is a too far walk, rent a car for a day or so. You'll see what you want to enjoy, and might want to go back to, and know if you will want a car for more time or not...then decide (this only works if it is not crazy high season when all cars are rented, but there are ways around that as well...talk to people, you'll find out how). There didn't used to even BE rental cars here...(If you only have a day here, go immediately by publico to Flamenco (food, water, beautiful beach, one day ticket to Paradise) and have a great time. Period)

Another possibility...if you see me on the island, I'm one of those guilt-laden people who think a half-empty car is a sin against our mother earth. I stop for walkers going to and from the beach. I offer rides to on-foot folks where I stay and where I eat and drink. I'm not the only one. If you are nice, you'll find a way.

Doug

if you want freedom of moving around the island, no need to bring a crar from SJ, you can rent a motorcycle in Culebra, they are cheap, and they are enough to get around

If you do not rent a car in San Juan, what are the transportation options to get from SJ to Fajardo to catch the Ferry?

You can take a cab from SJU, or you can schedule a ride with Sr. Padin or Zoraida. see http://www.islaculebra.com/puerto-rico/transportation-to-culebra.html We have used Padin on more than one occasion, and are anxious to try a ride with Zoraida as well.

Happy Diving!
