Holiday period in January?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi! I'm a first time poster.

I was in Culebra a couple months ago while visiting a friend whose sailboat was there for a few days. Fell in love with Flamenco and the campground.

At the time, which was around January 11 or so, there were campsites available and someone said that a holiday period had just ended. Was it 3 Saints or something like that? I didn't quite hear it and I can't find any info about it online.

We are arriving (family of 7) on Jan 8 and staying until Jan 19 (2008). Is Jan 8 a good time to arrive or a bad time?

We didn't have much other choice of dates due to my work schedule and also the availability of frequent flier tickets to Puerto Rico. (I still can't believe I was able to book 7 seats on the same itinerary!)

Thanks in advance, and I look forward to being an active member of this board.

Mort, welcome to the Forum!

January is usually quiet - generally speaking. Weekends might be a little busier on Flamenco.

For 3 Kings Day you will have the Cabalgata de Reyes on January 5th 2008. Which you will miss.

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael

Much appreciated, Michael. That's great news.

A couple other questions... When I was there in January and talked to some campers, they said that the sites are first come first served. But on this website, it sounds like reservations are needed and they assign you your campsite(s).

Also, the person I talked to says that they were charged $10 per tent. But the website sounds like there is a $20 charge per site.

I'm kind of confused. Do you know the current policies?

Should we try to make reservations in advance? It sounds like we'll be required to get two sites since we have 7 people in my family. We will have 4 tents total, most likely, though we might only have 3.

Just finished stowing all camping equipment and I'd like to share the experience.

Tents are $20 per night. Reservations were sugested by camp personnel only during "Semana Santa" from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, which is according to them the heavy season.

They (camp personnel) were going to assign a specific site, but my wife asked to be in an area she liked and they agreed. We had a screened tent for our kitchen, they did not charge us for this tent, but said that they would begin charging soon.

Beverages MUST be canned, no glass.

Besides Flamenco, Carlos Rosario Beach is a great snorkeling place and is about a 25 minute (each way) hike from Flamenco. Other beach worth mentioning is Zoni, but you'll probably like to rent a car to get there. Melones, Soldier Point and Tamarindo are also mentioned.

In short, loved to hear the surf while falling asleep in my tent. Had a great time and I'm sure you and your family will too !!!!!!!!!

Bienvenido!

Thanks, Pedro! Much appreciated.

Just to make sure I understand... they charge $20 per tent? So, if we have 7 people and would like to use four tents (since there are three couples), we will be paying $80 per night? That seems like a lot!

I know. We only had one tent, so we did not ask if more tents in a group paid same rate. Sorry.

It might seem like a lot, but is still a great price for the location! And 7 people for $80/night in Culebra is definitely a bargain ..

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael

True, enough, Michael. It is a bargain... just not as much of a one as I was hoping! LOL.
