Rental companies will not allow you to bring your rental car on the ferry(check with the company or your contract). You have trouble when on one of the outer islands and you are SOL.

I believe only residents can bring a car on the island. You have to rent one when you get on the island. I rented one at Carlos' Jeeps. You can make a reservation online.

Michael answered for me. If your flight time home out of SJU is tight, I'd fly Ceiba to Culebra (CPX) one-way and then pick up flight from CPX to SIG (Isla Grande) or to SJU depending on HOW tight.

You could drive the rental car to El Yunque and then on to the airport in Ceiba and fly from there to Culebra. I agree with the plane recommendation having done both many times.
