Boat Rental
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I will rent a boat in the island and I just want to know if there anyone had a bad experience with the boat damage charges. I just see a list of possible damages and the charge for each one. I think is fair to charge for damages, but there is any unfair experience?

Better check the boat first, even under water... do not hit anything.
If the boat is from Butch & Jackie, they are good persons, but again...
Do not hit the boat.

In response to Angel’s and Captain Guzman’s posts, here are some comments about the boat damage policies and procedures of Culebra Boat Rental.

The protocol regarding boat damage is described in the rental contract. All boat renters are given a contract and the opportunity to read it. The contract is written in plain language, not legalese. It includes common sense boating “do’s and don’ts” for things to do and to not do to avoid damaging the boat, motor, and equipment.

The boat renter is responsible for damages that occur during the rental period, i.e. when the boat is (or should be) under their control.

Boat malfunctions are not included as boat damages. For example, if the motor will not start or run due to a defective motor part or process, that is not considered as boat damage. Normal wear and tear also is not included as boat damage.

From the contract: “Boat Damage is physical damage or loss to the Boat beyond normal wear and tear. Sources of Boat Damage include, but are not necessarily limited to: soiling, marring, defacing, cracking, deforming, breaking, losing, stealing, mishandling, improperly operating, etc. Chase/search/rescue/recovery boat trips may be included; minimum charge $50/trip. Boat Malfunctions are excluded. CBR is the sole determiner of the extent of Boat Damage”

As Angel stated, the charges for damaging various parts of the boat and pieces of equipment are shown on an inventory checklist. We do a thorough pre-rental checkout with the renter, so he/she can see the condition of the boat before it goes out. The boat is raised up on a hoist, so the renter can view the propeller and the underside of the boat without having to go in the water. We also show the renter a sketch of the boat bottom and a photo of the prop.

After completion of the rental, we do a post-rental inspection in the presence of the renter (if they wish to be there).

Boat damages are rare. Without benefit of detailed analysis of our records, I would venture that boat damages occur in less than 1 or 2 percent of rentals. As for complaints about boat damages, nobody enjoys paying for them; that’s human nature. Almost invariably, however, renters are understanding and do not dispute paying for damages.

I have rented from Butch twice, and will do so again. We didn't have any damage, but were aware of our responsibilities had we not been as fortunate. It does keep you keenly aware of 'safety first', not only for the boat, but its occupants. The boats are solid and in good repair, but an easily scratched, fancy paint job isn't a problem you need worry about.
