our week on Culebra
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Just returned with my wife from 1-week trip to Culebra. I found this place for our vacation on internet, searching for good snorkeling in Puerto Rico. Thanks to this forum, we knew where to go. Snorkeling was great, indeed, and interesting spots were almost at every beach we reached - the best were Luis Pena (we got their on kayak) - east, Carlos Rosario, Zoni, edge of playa Tortuga on Culebrita.
We are thankful to Elias Robinson who met us 5 minutes after we landed, and helped us to locate everything (yes, the view is great from Casa Robinson, and this is a nice place to stay!), and to Captain Gami (Culebra Water Toys).
To see more, you do need a 4-wheel plus a good backpack to carry water & snorkeling stuff, best hours are 6am-11am, 4pm-6pm.
We saw impressive fresh turtle track on Bravo, and had we more time, I'd wish to join a turtle watch program (if it exists). Maybe it would be right thing to combine such program with garbage collecting - the garbage seems to be the main trouble with Culebra shores, and every visitor collecting few plastic things away from a beach would make a difference.
We've seen pretty large turtles from kayak, not very close to us.

Tim,

Thanks for the report. I really love your trash idea. I have done that frequently, but it might be more effective to either get a grass roots thing going through the forum or to see if the new mayor would get a program going (maybe with trash bags or collection points, like the Adopt a Highway program in the states).

I agree with the point about the trash. I backpack a lot in the Smoky Mountains. I have always made a point of carrying along a trash bag with me in my pack. I pick up as much trash as I can along the way and when I get back I just trhow the bag in a disposal container. On one trip some friends of mine and I found a campsite that was inundated with garbage. Between the 4 of us we carried out 3 large bags full of trash. Also, if you don't have a bag, use a cooler or even your pockets. A little effort among many people goes a long way!

Thanks for the tips. I'll make sure and bring a few trash bags with me on my trip in June.

Tim,

Tell me a little about your kayak trip to Luis Pena. My wife and I will be staying at Tamarindo Estates in June. I would like to kayak over to the island. How long did it take you and how difficult was it? Any tip you could give me would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Joel

I believe that depends on weather and experience, so generally it might be difficult, and dangerous. In our case water was pretty calm, and we had previous whitewater experience. From the town it took us from 1 to 1.5 hour to get to Luis Pena east side, and we went slowly, so we spent most of the time snorkeling. You can also check other posts on this forum for recommendations on kayaking. We rented kayak from Culebra Water Toys, and their equipment and service is great. If renting a kayak from Tamarindo, a trip should be quite short - just to cross the channel.
While normally it is an easy trip, everyone needs to be very carefull, check weather, ask local people.
Wish you happy vacations!

Joel,

My husband and I stayed at Tamarindo last fall and kayaked over to Luis Pena. At the time there was a drop off point of several kayaks lined up about a minute or two down the road from Tamarindo Estates. We rented from Jim Petersen (Ocean Safaris). Jim and his wife Barbara run Barbara Rosa's Restaurant. We had the kayak for the whole day. I believe it cost between $45 and $60 for a two person kayak. The day we kayaked the water was very peaceful and calm. We were very lucky because I hear it can be very tricky at times to navigate the channel between Luis Pena and Tamarindo. Luis Pena is gorgeous and virtually deserted! Snorkeling is awesome! You'll love it!!!

Have a good trip!

Joel,

Forgot to mention that the trip from Tamarindo over to Luis Pena took us about 50 minutes. We absolutely had no experience with kayaking. Really good exercise!!!
