Car rental near Fajardo ferry?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I'm planning to rent a car in San Juan and drop it off in Fajardo to take the ferry. Does anyone know if there is a car rental agency within walking distance of the ferry/lanchita?

no, but L&M will give you a free ride to the ferry dock. Avis will do a one way rental from the airport to the El Conquestador in Fajardo, but the cab ride to the ferry dock will be around $15. Your flight must get in real early to make it to the ferry in time.

I was just in Culebra on February 7, 2005. We took the ferry over from Fajardo. As soon as we got off the ferry there were representatives from two rental agencies greeting you as you exited the dock. One was Carlos Jeep Rental (787-742-3514) and I can't remember the other name. They took us in a van out to their office near the airport (a couple of minutes drive) and quickly set us up with a Jeep Wrangler. The staff was very friendly and explained the roads on the Island (all two of them) and took the top off the jeep for us. Since the ferry arrived around 11AM and was leaving a 3PM we only had the rental till about 2:15PM. This gave us enough time to drive out to Flamenco Beach and then out to Zoni Beach with about an hour at each. They also returned us to ferry after we returned the rental. So, I'm not sure if there is a rental agency within a quick walking distance from the ferry, but I would bet that some agency would most likely meet the ferry (based on my one time experience there). Good luck and enjoy the island, it's a real beauty.

There is a car rental very close to the ferry dock, I do not think you can leave the car there, you'll have to return it to San Juan.
There are two paying parking lots, and the car rental is at the left side on the corner.

Nice stay...

Hi,
Thanks for all your input.
By the way, if you get the chance to find out what car rental agency that is, please post it. I'm planning on stopping off at different kioskos for a taste of the local cuisine, then off to a dip at luquillo beach, all while driving down from San Juan to Fajardo.

The next morning I'd like to visit El Yunque before dropping off the rental car in Fajardo, and taking the afternoon ferry to Culebra, where I'll spend 3 days as a beach bum!

Once I'm back to Fajardo I'd like to rent a car again, make similar stops at kioskos, and spend a day visiting different parts of San Juan/Old San Juan.

As you can see, this would all be very impractical (and expensive!) this would be if I where to take taxis.

So if there isn't a car rental agency near the Fajardo terminal (this would be a lucrative business venture), I may have to adjust my plans in order to make it in time to take the ferry.

You can do all the above with L & M car rental.

They have a shuttle from International Airport where you pick up a car. You can drop the car off in Fajardo and they shuttle you to the ferry.

And reverse that plan. They will pick you up from the ferry and you can drop it off at their location near International airport and they will again shuttle you to the airport.

Prices vary widely, depending on what type of car you get, what company you rent from, how long you keep the car, and if you get the damage waiver (most major credit cards have this type of coverage...for free!).

So if you were to get an economy car, you would typically pay around $25-$30/day plus optional damage waiver ($12-$20/day), plus recovery fee of about $25 - $35 (only if your dropping off the car at a different place from where you picked it up).

If you're keeping the car for a week or more, some companies offer weekly rates at a considerable discount.

If you shop wisely, use your credit card and opt out of the damage waiver an economy car you shouldn't have to pay more than $40/day max total....Alot cheaper and more convenient than getting around on taxi if your going to see the island!

However, if your plan is to get to your hotel and become a "hermit crab", than it may be cheaper to take the taxi.

By the way Aaron, those prices only apply to the big island (Puerto Rico). Prices may be somewhat higher on culebra, since (from what I understand) most car rentals are jeep type vehicles.
